UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CHARLES L. WHAITE, OF WAVERLY, PENNSYLVANIA. I
IMPROVEMENT IN CULTIVATORS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 107,142. dated September 6, 1870.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, O. L. IVHAITE, of Waverly, in the county of Luzerne, and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and valuable Improvement in Flows; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.
Figurel of the drawings is a representation of a central vertical longitudinal section of my invention. Fig. 2 is a top view of the same.
My invention relates to combined single and treble plow cultivators; and it consists, chiefly, in the mode of construction thereof, whereby all the parts may be readily formed of wroughtiron-an object especially to be desired, whether the superior tenacity of the material be con sidered or the convenience to farmers living at a remote distance from foundries.
The letter A of the drawings represents the central plow, which is sometimes used separately. It is secured to the end of the central plow-beam, B, of wrought bar-iron, bent downward with a free curve to give the necessary inclination to the plow-share. The forward end of the bar is curved upward at a, and perforated with a series of holes, a c, for the knuckle-pin of the clevis O.
D D represent the side plows, attached to the curved ends of the beams E, which are also wrought of bar-iron. The beam E is formed in two parts, jointed together in such a man ner as to allow ofa horizontal adjustment, while vertical play is prevented. The forward part of the beam, which is secured to the central plow-beam by screw-bolts and nuts, is lettered G in the drawings, and the joint is made by twisting the adjacent ends of the sectional beams E and G half around in such a manner that the broad side of each bar will be brought into a horizontal position. The pivot-bolteis then inserted and the j oint formed.
H H represent the handles, secured firmly to the central plow-beam at h.
K is a brace-bar extending horizontally from one handle to the other, shouldered at each end, to secure the eyes of the brace-rods m m, and fastened with nuts upon the outside of the handles. The braces m m extend downward, and are secured to the rear part of the central beam by the bolt 7c. The handles are also connected in rear of the brace-bar K by the rod 8, extending downwardfrom eachhandle and flattened at its center, to receive the thumb-screw t and thumb-nut 12, whereby the adjustment of the perforated bars Z Z, and consequently of the side plows toward or from each other, is accomplished. These perforated bars are secured to the beams E by means of nuts n, a suitable screw being formed on the end of each bar.
I do not claim, broadly, a combined single and treble cultivator, whether wrought or cast; but
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The arrangement, in a cultivator formed of wrought-iron, of the double-curved central plow-beam, B, split clevis O, braces m, horizontal brace K, handles H, bent brace s, thumb-nut o and screw t, and sectional side plow-beams, E, horizontally jointed by twisting the adjacent ends of the sections at c, all constructed as set forth.
In testimony that I claim the above I have hereunto subscribed my name in the presence of two witnesses.
CHARLES L. WHAITE.
Witnesses G. S. NIonoLsoN, D. CHAMBERLAIN.
