CULTIVATOR.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June 16, 1914.
Application filed December 8, 1913. Serial No. 805,311.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES E. WARD, a citizen of the United States, residing at Trousdale, in the county of Pottawatomie and State of Oklahoma, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Culti vators, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention relates to improvements in cultivators, and is designed particularly to furnish sets of teeth that are detachable from the implement and may be replaced with facility and ease.
The primary object of the invention is the provision of detachable devices for use with cultivators, that are adapted for cultivating the soil either on a bed or in a listed furrow, and each device itself, which is easily attachable and detachable, also comprises adjustable parts for converting it to suit different circumstances.
The invention consists essentially in certain novel combinations and arrangements of parts whereby the device is adjusted and by which the teeth are held or clamped in proper position.
In the accompanying drawings I have illustrated one complete example of the physical embodiment of my invention constructed according to the best mode I have so far devised for the practical application of the principles of my invention.
Figure 1 is a plan view of a cultivator showing my improved attachment applied thereto. Fig. 2 is a side elevation, enlarged, partly in section showing one of the pair of devices. Fig. 3 is a front elevation of Fig. 2. Fig. 4c is an enlarged detail plan view.
My attachment is adapted for use in connection with any of the usual or standard types of implements of the cultivator class, and in Fig. 1 I have illustrated, only for convenience in showing the adaptation of my attachments, a type of riding cultivator which comprises the frame 1, axle 2, wheels 3, draft gear or rigging 4L, seat 5, and braces 6, 6, as usual. These parts form no part of my invention, but are designated to illustrate the applicability of my invention, and it will of course be understood that my attachment may be used with other and numerous types of implements for cultivating the soil. My attachments are directly connected to the beams 7, 7 carried by the frame 1 of the implement, and a convenient mode of attaching is to use the U-bolts 8 which secure the upright or post 9 to the beam as shown, but of course other suitable attaching means may be employed to rigidly hold the post 9 to the beam, if desired.
A pair of the attachments completes a set, one to be attached at each side of the implement, and it will be noted that they are reversible, or interchangeable. Each attachment comprises the post 9 which is formed with an angular base 10 perforated to accommodate the bolts 11 and 12, and having an integral flange 13.
The angular base 10 is designed to support the spring teeth 14 of the cultivator, which as illustrated in the drawings are scratchers of well known type. Each tooth is provided with a flattened shank 15 which is clamped between the base plate 16 and the cap plate 17 by bolts 18, except the central tooth which is held by bolt 12. The plates and shanks are perforated for the passage of the bolts and by means of the nuts 19 the shanks are securely held between the plates as shown. An extension 20 having a slot 21 extending in a curve with the bolt 12 as a center, projects backward from the plate 17 and it will be seen that the clamped teeth may be swung around the bolt 12 as a pivot, to desired adjusted position, and then by turning nut 22 on bolt 11 the parts will be held in adjusted position.
Having thus fully described my invention, What I claim is The combination, in a cultivator with a post having an angular perforated base, of a base plate, a cap plate and teeth having shanks between said plates and said plates and shanks perforated for the accommodation of clamping bolts, said cap plate having a slotted extension, and a pivot bolt connecting the base and plates whereby the teeth may be adjusted relatively to the post base.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
CHARLES E. WARD.
