To alt 'whom it may concern Be it known that I, ANTHONY J. SGHIN- DLER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Bloomeld, in the Icounty of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented new and useful Improvements in Box- Spouts, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to boxes and more especially to spouts provided for same and which may be attached to the tops at very small cost so that the spout may be applied to boxes t0 be thrown away as will be more fully explained in the following specification, set forth in the claim and illustrated in the drawings, wherein, A

In the manufacture of pasteboal boxes containing food and similar articles, a serivous inconvenience has been experienced by the necessary cutting of the lid of the box and having no means by which the detached lid could be held down to prevent the destruction vof the material after a small amount has been used. The present invention is adapted to overcome this diiculty because it provides va cheapl and simple spout in an opening in the box and which may be returned to its place after extracting certain amount of the material.

The lid consists of a flap ,10 of suitable size to cover an opening l1, leaving a margin to completely close the opening, and a rear end 12 which is pasted to the box. The lid may be weakened along the line 13 by means of perforations or a similar method so that the lid may-be 'opened as shown in Fig. 2. Attached to the under side 'of the 11d l0 and within the box is a cardboard portion 14 having wings 15 which are weakened as above described and adapted to be bent on the line 16. 'Before the box is opened, the iiap 10'a'nd.wings 15 occupy the lposition shown in Fig. 4, but when the flap is raised,

shown in Figs. 2 and 3 in consequence of their passing out of the sides 17 of the openingl v11. After the flap 10 has been drawn outward to a right angle, further progress is prevented by means of the stops 18 which engage the upper edge of the opening 11. The spout is now in position to deliver the contents of the box and when the quantity desired has been extracted, the flap l0 is pushed back again and the wings 15 spread themselves beneath the lower surface of the box. When the flap is returned to its original position, the opening is closed and almost hermetically sealed, thus guarding against germs, insects, dust, etc., entering the package and preventing moisture and the handling of the contents. The package is thus sanitary, attractive and serviceable.

In order to more securely seal the box, a covering of paper or a -seal of any appropriate design may be pasted on the cover and over the fiap in order to insure the contents from being tampered with, and prevent leakage, dampness and injurious influences to otherwise injure the contents.

It is obvious that other modifications may be resorted to in the use of this device without departing from the essential features aoove described.

The spout may be applied to any side of the box and at any certain corner which may be found most useful.

In addition to weakening the Hap 10 along the line 13, another rouletted line 19 may be added near the outer end of the flap in order to secure a hold thereto when raising same.

What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is,-

In combination with a box having at its side an opening provided with rectangularly disposed edges, a closure for the opening comprising a flap of greater area than the opening and secured to the outer surface of the said side of the box beyond one edge only of the opening and provided with a score located at the said edge of the opening, said Hap adapted to lie directly against the outerl surface of the box when the closure is closed,
