REUBEN S. CO-RMIEB, OF NEW BEDFORD, MASSACHUSETTS.
PICTURE-HANGER.
LIQEZAQL To all whom it may con 361%.
Be it known that I, REUBEN S. GORMI'ER, a citizen of the United States, residing at New Bedford, in the county of Bristol and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Picture-Hangers, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in picture hangers and one object is the provision of a device which will be attached directly to the frame, dispensing with the usual hook and suspension coil wire and which will suspend the picture in the proper inclined relation to the wall.
Another object of my invention is the provision of a device which can be used in connection with an ordinary hook or which may be applied to the usual molding and which will be entirely efficient in either case.
Another object of my invention is the provision of a hanger which will be attached to the frame and which will be of the simplest, cheapest and most durable construction, ornamental and attractive in appearance and entirely practical in every particular.
With these objects in view, my invention consists of a picture hanger embodying novel features of construction and arrangement of parts, substantially as shown, described and claimed.
Figure 1 is a perspective View of the picture, with my hanger applied and supported from a hook, to illustrate the application of the device. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the picture hanger upon an enlarged scale, and Fig. 8 is a perspective view of a modified construction of the device. Fig. 4 a sectional view through the retaining device or slide, and Fig. 5 is a side elevation showing the picture frame and hanger in position with reference to the wall.
The picture hanger is of extremely simple construction, being formed preferably from a single piece of wire to provide the suspen- Specification of Letters Patent.

Serial No. 785,703.
sion loop A to engage a hook or nail B, and with the pair of depending converging arms C, which are secured in proper relation and prevented from spreading by means of the disk or slide E, having the pair of engaging eyes F, and further formed with the depending diverging arms G, which are formed with the pair of outwardly extending bends H formed with the pair of oft-set portions J, which are disposed at an angle to the bends H, and terminating in the pair of upstanding eyes K, which are adapted to be attached by means of suitable fastenings L, to the frame M. This is the construction of my device shown in Figs. 1, 2, 4t and 5, and is adapted to be suspended from a nail or hook, while the construction shown in Fig. 3 has the suspension loop formed with the hook N adapted to fit over the usual molding for suspending the hanger in proper position.
It will thus be seen that the hanger is secured directly to the frame, also that it dispenses with the cord or wire and can be attached either to a hook or molding, also that the retaining slide holds the arms in proper spaced relation and prevents them from spreading, and that the device can be produced at so small a price as to render it useful, desirable and practical.
I claim:
A picture hanger consisting of the upper suspension portion, the depending arms formed with outward extending bends and terminating in a pair of eyes in substantially vertical relation and adapted to be secured to the picture frame, and a retaining slide having a pair of engaging eyes fitting upon and securing said arms to prevent spreading and adjusting said arms.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
