IMPROVEMENT lN BEE'H|VE`S. 'I

The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making parl: of the same.

To all twhom it may concer-n Be it known that I, SAMUEL OUPLIN, of Iowa. Falls, in the county of Hardin and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bee- Hives; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, referencebeing had to the accompanying drawing and to the letters of reference 'marked thereon which form a part of this specification. 'My invention is intended as an improvementupon the bee-'hive for which Letters Patent were grante'd to me July 28, 1868, and November 24, 1868 and it consists- Y First, in-a lining for the front and rear sides of the brood-chamber g Second, in one or more double partitions of slats placed in the frames of the surplus honey-box;

Third, in the construction and arrangement of'a ventilator, whereby the hive can be ventilated and the lightY excluded v Fourth, in the arrangement of the feeder for ventilating purpose; `and Fifth, in the construction ofthe shutter on the front side of the hive.

In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use thev same, I willnow proceed to describe its construct-ion and operation, referring to the annexed drawing,

In this specification I do not deem it necessary to describe more than what is necessary for a full understanding of the' features. now claimed' by me, as the other parts of the-hive have been fully'explained inmy former patentsfa'bove referred to.

` A represents the brood-chamber of my hive, the frontalid rear sides of which are, on the inner side, provided with a lining, B.

A These linings form shoulders against which to rest the movable boards C G, said boards being held i11- place by the strips D D, as mentioned in my patent of November 24,1868.`

Theselinings also form 'at their upperends a rabbet, upon which the comb-framesE E can rest.

Inth'is rabbet is inserted a strip,` a, of tin, so that the frames may actually rest onsaidstrips instead of on the lining, thereby preventingthe bees from stickving the frames fast to the lining or hive. The strips :sa may be dispensed with if sodesired..

. This opening may be closed from-tho outside by the door K, which, with the shutter, is held in place'by the button L.

"I n'the.; door K is a hole, in which a tin elbpw orventilatr, M, is inserted, the shorter or inner end of which fis covered with wire ganze,.so that the hive can be. ventilated and the light excluded.

The feeder I is provided on its inner upper edge with'a ange, h, which projects inward and slightly downward. This flange, aswell as' the inner side of the feeder, near the upper edge, is perforated.`

Vhen the feeder is. moved close in it closes the passage i, where the bees enter, and lthey ygetair through th'e perfdrations in the feeder. When the feeder is drawn out a littlethe bees can come onty of the hive into the feeder. This ventilation is for winter, so that the bees cannot comevout of the hive or brood-chamber.

What I claim as new, and desireto secure. by Letters Patent, isrl. One or more double partitions, formed of slats, in the frames of asurplus honey-box, substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.

2. The -perforated feeder I, provided with a perforated flange h, and used for Ventilating purposes, substantially as herein set forth.4
