THE NORRIS PETERS 60.. PHOIDLITHOQ WASHINGTON, D
JAMES G. ANDREWS, OF CLEVELAND, OHIO.
BOBBIN'.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Apr. 20, 1915.
Application filed April 17, 1913. Serial No. 761,727.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, J AMES G. ANDREWS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Cleveland, in the county of Cuyahoga and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bobbins, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to bobbins generally and particularly to devices applied upon bobbins for holding the end of the thread in starting the winding operation.
More specifically the invention comprises a bobbin having the usual cylindrical sleeve provided at its ends with suitable flanges and having upon the cylindrical barrel a suitable sleeve cut away to form a tongue, the free end of which is curved slightly to permit the insertion of thread thereunder, the fit between the sleeve and the tongue and the barrel being such as to clamp the thread tightly and hold it during the winding op-- eration.
The invention may be further briefly summarized as consisting in the construction and combination of parts hereinafter set forth in the following description, drawings and claims.
Referring to the drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation of a bobbin provided with my device showing the edge of the tongue; Fig. 2 is a similar view of the bobbin showing the tongue in plan; Fig. 2 is a sectional view through the tongue; Fig. 4 is a section upon the line 44 of Fig. 1; and Fig. 5 shows a modified form of tongue.
In carrying out the invention any preferred form and construction of parts may Copies of this patent may be obtained 'for device being turned from a solid bar. Engaging around the main barrel or cylinder 1 is a sleeve 4 cut away for half its length at 5 with a tongue 6 projecting from the edge into the space formed by the cutting away of the sleeve and having its ends 7 turned up to permit the entry of the thread under the tongue. This sleeve 4 is preferably made from a sheet of metal and is formed around the barrel or cylinder and secured to it in any preferred manner.
In the modification shown in Fig. 5, the edges of the tongue 6 are sharpened to form a cutting edge 8 which is useful in cuttingofl' the end of the thread which would project from the tongue.
Having described my invention, I claim 1. The combination with a bobbin having end flanges, of a sleeve surrounding the barrel arranged between the flanges, said sleeve having a cut-away portion, a tongue ex tending from the edge of the metal in parallel alinement with the axis of the bobbin and into the space formed by the cut-away portion of the sleeve, and a guiding end portion carried by said tongue for guiding the thread thereunder.
2. The combination with a bobbin having end flanges, of a sleeve surrounding the barrel arranged between the flanges, said sleeve having a cut-away portion, a tongue extending longitudinally of the sleeve from the edge of the metal into the space formed by the cut-away portion of the sleeve, said tongue being provided with side cutting edges, and a guiding end portion carried by said tongue for guiding the thread there-- under.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in presence of two witnesses as follows.
