IP LUMB-IBOIB-POINT PROTECTOR AND CORD-HOLDER.
' Specification of LettersPatent.
Application filed December 2, 1914. Serial No. 875,096.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, DAVID, R. BYRON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful. Improvements in Plumb Bob Point Protectors and Cord- Holders, of which the followingis a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in plumb bob point protector. and'cordholder, the object of the invention being to provide an attachment which is positioned over the pointed end of the plumb bob to thoroughly protect the point, and adapted to receive the cord wound about thesanie. and about the plumb bob, and securely hold the cord from unwinding. I
Heretofore, it has been the practice for carpenters and others to wrap the cord around the plumb bob and throw the same into the box or receptacle containing other tools. In the course of time, the cord becomes more or less unwound and tangles about other tools in the box as well as causing the thread to become knotted and troublesome to use.
It is the purpose of my invention to permit the cord to be so securely wound about the plumb bob that it cannot work loose, and hence the objections above noted are entirely overcome and the cord can be readily unwound and will be ready for instant use whenever desired.
A further object is to provide an attachment of the character stated which is adapted for use on any style of plumb bob, and which may be manufactured and sold at an extremely low price.
With these and other objects in view, the invention consists in certain novel features of construction and combinations and arrangements of parts as will be more fully hereinafter described and pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings: Figure 1 is a view in side elevation illustrating my improved attachment in operative position on the end of the plumb bob. Fig. 2 is a fragmentary view in longitudinal section. Fig. 3 is a view similar to Fig. 2 showing the attachment in section at right angles to Fig. 2, and Fig. 4: is a perspective view of my improved attachment.
1 represents a plumb bob having a pointed end 2, and at its oppositeend provided with a neck 3 having a head 4 at its free end.
5 is the cord projecting from the center of the head 4, and of the necessarylength for ordinary use.
My improved attachment6 constitutes 'a metal casting having a conical bore 7 to receive the pointed end 2 of the plumb bob. The casting 6, attwo opposite sides, tapers toward its outer end as shown at 8, and is provided in its extreme outer end with an opening9, so that dirt which collects in the attachment can be forced through the opening. The other sides 10 of the attachment are slightly tapered, and in the extreme outer end of the casting, Iprovide two cord receiving recesses 11, the walls of which are adapted to grip and hold-the cord;
12, 12 represent arms integral with the attachment at its wider end, and projecting in opposite directions. These arms 12 have their outer faces. recessed as shown at 13 to receive the cord, and, prevent the latter from slipping off the ends of the arms.
While my invention is, of course, not limited to any particular manner of winding the cord, I have illustrated in- Fig. 1 an extremely efiicient, method of doing so. In this view, it willbe noted that the cord 5 is extended longitudinally of the plumb bob as shown at 14, over one arm 12 of the attachment 6. The cord then extends back to the neck portion 3 and is wound around the latter as shown at 15. The cord then extends along the opposite side of the plumb bob as shown at 17 and around the other arm 12 of the attachment 6. The cord then extends back to the neck portion 5 and is'again wound around the same, and if desired, several of these longitudinal runs of the cord may be had around the arms 12 and the neck portion 15 in accordance with the length of the cord.
Nhen the cord has been positioned around the arms,it is then wound around the smaller end of the plumb bob adjacent the attachment as shown at 18. This last-named winding causes the longitudinal runs ofv the cord to be drawn in tightly against the plumb bob, and take up any slack in the cord as well as compel the attachment to be drawn tightly on the end of the plumb bob. After this winding 18, the cord is passed around the arms 12 and through the cord holding recesses 11 in the end of the attach- Patented July 20, 1915.
ment. The walls of these recesses 11 serve as gripping surfaces to firmly hold the cord and prevent the same from unwinding.
Various slight changes might be made in the general form and arrangement of parts described without departing from my invention, and hence I do not limit myself to the precise details set forth, but consider myself at liberty to make such changes and alterations as fairly fall within the spirit and scope of the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. An attachment of the character stated, comprising a hollow body adapted to receive the pointed end of a plumb bob, and said body having laterally projecting cord receiving arms thereon, substantially as described.
2. An attachment of the character stated, comprising a hollow body adapted to receive the pointed end of a plumb bob, said body having integral laterally projecting cordreceiving arms at its opposite sides, substantially as described.
8. An attachment of the character stated, comprising a hollow body adapted to receive the pointed end of a plumb bob, said body having integral laterally projecting cordreceiving arms at its opposite sides, and said body having cord-receiving recesses in its outer end, substantially as described.
4. The combination with a plumb bob having a pointed end, and an integral neck at it opposite end with an enlarged head at the outer end of the neck, and a cord secured at one end to said head, of an attachment constituting a hollow body positioned on the pointed end of the plumb bob, the said cord wound about the plumb bob, and the said attachment, the latter having means thereon for holding the end of the cord against movement, substantially as described. v
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
DAVID R. BYRON.
