To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANK J. VLoHEK, a citizen of the United States, residing at Cleveland, in the county of Cuyahoga and State of Qhio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Valve-Spring- Lifters, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a tool for relieving the tension of the coiled sprlng around the valve stem of an internal combustion engine to permit the removal of thevalve.
The princi al object of the invention is to provide a valve spring lifter-Which is of simple practioalconstruetion and inexpen-- sive to manufacture, and is very eflicient for accomplishing the above stated purpose, the
tool being so designed that a powerful cam action is obtained for releasingthe tension of the coiled spring with comparatively tool.
With the above and other objects in view as will be readily understood, the invention will be hereinafter fully described in connection with the accompanying drawings, which illustrate a preferred embodiment thereof, and the novel features of the invention will then be distinctly pointed out in the appended claim.
In the drawings like characters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
Figure 1 is a side view ofa valve spring lifter constructed in accordance with my invention, showing the same in position for relieving the tension of the valve spring, Fig. 2 is a plan view of the tool, Fig. 3 is an enlarged fragmental portion, partially in section, illustrating the cam action feature of the tool, and Fig. 4 is a sectional view on line 44 of Fig. 3.
Referring to the drawings, 1 represents a portion of an internal combustion engine, 2 the exhaust valve supported by a stem 3, and 4: a coiled spring surrounding the valve stem. A cotter pin 5 fixed in the valve stem at a suitable position is adapted to support a cupped washer 6 for carrying said coiled spring to cause the same to exert the necessary tension on the valve. The lower end of said valve stem is slidably mounted in a stationary support 7, and is adapted to be engaged by the usual rotatable cam for actuating the valve.
The tool herein set forth and described is 3 designed to compress the coiled spring 4= for relieving the tension on the valve, so that the cotter pin '5 may be easily withdrawn and the cupped washer 6 removed topermit the ready removal ofthe valve, or-after replacing the valve, the washer may be restored to its proper position and the cotter pin conveniently inserted. a e
The valve spring releasing tool consists of a pair of complemental levers 8 and9, having corresponding outwardly curved ends 10, which are pivotally connected at 11 between pairs of lugs 12 of a transverse head 13. Said levers are slightly tapering in width from their attached ends to their free ends, which terminate in flattened and forked members 14, for straddling the valve stem 3. The forked members 14 have sharp noses, indicated at 15, to permit easy and quick insertion of the tool in its application for releasing the tension on the coiled spring. i
.The levers 8 and 9 are forced apart by operating a handle 16 formed integral with a threaded rod 17 which is rotatably mounted in the transverse head 13. 7 The inner end of said threaded rod is reduced in diameter as shown at 18, thereby leaving an annular shoulder 19. Swiveled to said reduced portion is a longitudinally reciprocating cross cam 20, which is provided with a boss 21 for receiving the thrust of the shoulder 19. The projecting end of said threaded rod is further reduced and threaded at 22 for receiving a stop nut 23 to retain the cam on the rod. Said cam is slidably connected to the which correspond to and are adapted toengage the inner edges 27 of said curved end portions. The outer walls 28 of the cam slots 25 are adapted to engage the outer edges 29 of the curved end portions of the levers for forcing the levers to their closed position. Said outer walls 28 of the cam slots are chamfered or rounding as shown to allow free sliding movement of the cam upon the levers.
In order to permit ready assembling of the levers 8 and 9 within the cam slots 25, portions of the cam above the slots are removed, as shown at 30, but overlapping edges 31 are left to retain said levers within said slots. The width of the openings between the ends 32 of the edges 31 and the outer walls 28 of the cam slots is of a size sufficient for admitting the narrower tapering portions of the levers. are thus placed within the slots and the cam is slidably moved to its proper position, the
