JEWELRY-SETTING.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, Hnnsonnn D. Bor- FIELD, a citizen of the United States, residing at Sweetwater, in the county of Mineral and State of Nevada, have invented new and useful Improvements in Jewelry-Setting, of which the following is a specification.

An object of the invention is to provide a simple and effective device for use in setting jewels in rings or pins, such as scarf pins and the like.

The invention contemplates, among other features, the provision of a device which will permit of readily setting a jewel in a ring or scarf pin or other like article of jewelry and which will not only secure the jewel therein so as to prevent the same from becoming lost but wherein the jewel can be conveniently removed to be replaced by another one if desired, without necessitating taking the article of jewelry to a jeweler, the parts for setting the jewelry being simple, readily assembled and so arranged that the jewel can be set or unset by persons not skilled in the jewelry art.

' In the further disclosure of the invention reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, constituting a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference denote corresponding parts in all the views, and in which:

Figure 1 is a perspective view of the setting; Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view taken through the same; and Fig. 3 is a horizontal sectional view taken on the line 3-3 in Fig. 2.

Referring more particularly to the views, I provide a body 10 having a tapered recess 11 forming a seat 12 and provided with an opening 13 communicating with the recess 11. A plurality of prongs 14, each of a semicircular configuration, are adapted to be arranged in the recess 11 to repose upon the seat 12, said prongs being formed to support a jewel or stone 15 when the prongs have been arranged in the recess 11 as men- I tioned. In order to secure the prongs in gripping engagement with the stone to prevent unseating of the stone relatively to the facets or removal of the stone or jewelry from the prongs, I provide a clamping member 16 which lies within the prongs and is adapted to have a portion thereof project Specification of Letters Patent.

through the opening 13 in the body. A screw 17 is then screwed into an opening 18 in the clamping member 16, said screw passing upwardly from the under side of the body and having its head 19 adapted to abut against a seat 20 formed in the under side of the body, thus when the screw is screwed up causing the member 16 to exert a binding or clamping action upon the lower ends of the prongs which repose in the recess 11 and which are relatively tapered on account of the taper of the recess, thereby binding the prongs against the body and thus causing the stone or jewel to be rigidly supported by the prongs.

It will be apparent that by simply removing the screw from the clamping member, the said member and prongs can be readily removed from the body, thus resulting in the disengagement of the stone with respect to the prongs and it will be clear that the stone can be readily removed to be replaced by another stone or jewel, if desired, by the ordinary layman or persons not skilled in the art of setting stones.

Having thus described my invention, I claim:

In a jewelry setting, the combination with a body provided with an opening and having a tapered recess, with which the opening communicates, of a seat formed in the body, a series of prongs for disposition in the tapered recess of the body and adapted to repose uponsaid seat, a clamping member lying within the prongs and engaging the same; said clamping member having an opening therein from the under side thereof, with the clamping member lying wholly within the recess in the body and having its face bearing against the inner faces of the prongs, and a screw adapted to pass upwardly through the opening in the body and extend into the opening in the clamping member whereby to rigidly clamp the said member relatively to the body and against the said prongs to secure the prongs against displacement in the recess of the body.
