Description
UNITED STATES PATENT QFFICE.
EBENEZER H. PLANT, OF PLANTSVILLE, CONNECTICUT.
IMPROVEMENT IN DIES FOR FORMING THE HEADS OF SCREW EVEBOLTS.
Specification forming part of Letters Iatent No. 118,879, dated September 12, 1871.
To au whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EBENEZER H. PLANT, of Plantsville, in the county of Hartford and State of Connecticut, have invented a new Improvement in Dies for Forming the Heads of Screw Eyebolts; and I do hereby declare the following, when taken in connection with the accompanying drawing and the letters of reference marked thereon, to be a full, clear, and exact description ofthe same, and which said drawing constitutes part of this specification, and repre sents, in
Figure l a view of the construction as heretofore produced 5 Fig. 2, my improved screw-eye; Fig. 3, a top view oi' the lower dies; Figs. 4 and 5, perspective views of the two parts of the lower die, Fig. 6, a face view of the upper die; and in Fig. 7, a section of the same. l
This invention relates to an improvement in the construction of what are termed screw-eyes, generally employed as an eye, with which is combined a ring to be attached to hitching-posts, the ring passing through the eye. Heretofore Y these eyes have been made by drawing down the eye end and bending over to form the eye, and welding the end thus bent onto the body. In this construction the eye is formed as seen in Fig. l, not round in form but requiring considerable labor for its production. The object of my invention is to simplify this construction and produce an eye round and symmetrical. To this end it consists in the construction of dies, as more fully hereinafter described, to form the head upon the body without welding.
Ais one part and B the other partof the lower die, each part recessed, as at O, to receive the body -part of the blank upon which the head is to b e formed. At the upper end of the recess another recess, D, is formed for the lower portion of the head. The upper die E is formed with a recess, F, corresponding` to the other portion of the head.
The two parts A B of the die are arranged as in Fig. 3, and between these the blank is placed and held with a portion projecting above suiciently to form the head. Onto this projecting portion the other part E of the die is struck down with sufficient force to upset the metal and form the head solid. The head is then punched to make a perforation, t', as seen in Fig. 2.
By this construction the eyes are produced of much better form, more nished in appearance, and at less cost than as heretofore produced.
With that class of eyes with which a ring is to be combined the wire is passed through the ring and welded in the usual manner.
I claim as my invention- As an improvement in dies for forming the heads of eye-bolts, the cavities C, D, and F, of the forms substantially as shown in the die-blocks A, B, and E, represented in the drawing.
