PAPER-CUTTING MACHINE.
Specification of Letters Patent. Patented J 11y 18, 1916.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, DARIUS T. WADHAMS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Oswego, in the county of Oswego and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Paper-Cutting Machines, of which the following is a specification.
This invention embodies improvements in paper cutting machines which are particularlyv designed to contribute to accuracy and effectiveness in the cutting operation. The improved features thereof comprise a locking device for the back-gage custom arily employed, this locking device operating rigidly to clamp the back-gage in its adjusted position and operating connections therefor whereby the locking device may conveniently be actuated by the operator.
It also includes novel features of construction and mode of operation as hereinafter described.

V In the figures '1 indicates the usual supporting standard for the table 2. The stand ard is provided with uprights 3 having finished front. surfaces 5 to coact with guidebars 6 in forming guide-way bearings for the usual knife-stock 8 carrying the knifeblade 10. The guide-bars 6 are bolted to the front of the standards by securing bolts 7. The parts so far referred to are of usual construction and'a're shown in Fig. 1 at one side of the machine only but it will be understood that the guide-way for the knife-stock is duplicated at the opposite side of the machine and that the knife is operated therein in the customary manner to descend upon the work to be cut.
A suitable back-gage 12 is provided for the purpose of correctly positioning the work upon the table. The back-gage 12, as
'here shown'is supported on the table rear portion and is arranged to slide thereon toward and from the knife and for the convenlent adjustment of the gage it is provided w th a depending attachment lug or gibplece 14 to which is attached an operating cable15. As shown in Fig; 1 the cable ends are attached to hooks 16 adjustably threaded 1n the attachment piece and the cable is forwardly extended around a forward drum 17 fulcrumed on the under side of the table forward'portiom the drum'having a hand wheellS 'attached'thereto. The cable is carrled rearwardly over pulley 20 journaled on 'the rear extremity of the table.
As will be best understood-by reference to Fig. 3 the table rear extension upon which a the back-gage moves, is provided with a cen tral slot 22 and fitted thereto is the guidepiece 24 bolted to the under side of the gage 12 by securing bolts 25, which pass through the gage and are threaded into the attachment piece 14, and by an additional bolt 26 threaded into the guide-piece 24. The bolts 25 are thus arranged to secure both the guide and the attachment piece 14 to the under side of the gage, the latter. being arranged beneath the table and formed to act in a further capacity now tobe described.
An important feature of the present invention resides in a locking device. adapted positively to lock the back-gage 12 against -movement after it has been correctly positioned on the table. For this purpose I have devised a mechanism acting directly to clamp the-gage onto the table and I have formed the attachment piece in the following manner soas to form a. support for the the attachment lug 14 will beseen to have 1 formed in' its upper portion a central cross- "slotx28 and fitted in the.crossslot to bear on the under portion of the table is the I clamp strap 30. .This clamp strap 30 is arranged'to be forced into clamping engagement with the table under the action of a cam 32 keyed onto an actuating. shaft 33 by an elongated key. The shaft 33 extends from front to rear parallel to the table slot 22 and it is supportedin the respective front and rear journal bearings 3637. The attachment piece 14 is provided with the depending ears 3838 apertured to fit the shaft 33 and between these cars the cam 32 is confined to move with the gage; the key clamping parts. Referring to Figs 2 and'3 40 of the cam is fitted to an elongated keyslot 42 in shaft 33 of suflicient length to permit of the desired reciprocal movement of the gage.
On the front of the standard is arranged a bearing bracket 45 for an operating shaft 4-6 having on its front end the hand lever 48 and on its rear end the segment gear 19 in engagement with coacting segment gear 50 fixed on the locking 0r actuating shaft 33. By manipulating the lever 48 which is conveniently arranged for the operator, the actuating shaft 83- is rotated, communicating a like movement to the cam connected thereto. The cam then acts to force the clamp strap into binding engagement with the table under side; this efiect being obtained by the engagement of the cam with the lower face of a bar or clip 52 attached rigidly, but adjustably, to the clamp strap by means of the connecting bolts 53-53 having locking nuts 54c thereon. The looking nuts provide, by their adjustment, for
accurately adjusting the relation of the clip and cam and to compensate for wear on the parts.
The operation of the cam 32 as stated is to force the clamp-strap into binding en-- gagement with the under portion of the table and in so doing there will be a resulting downward force exerted on the locking shaft 33 on the further movement of the cam after the strap has engaged the table. By reason of the close running fit of the locking shaft to the ears 38 of the attachment piece 14 and the give or resiliency inherent in the locking shaft the downward force exerted by the cam will be transmitted to the attachment piece whereby the gage will be pulled downwardly into clamping engagement with the upper surface of the table. The securing means for the clamp as customarily employed is here indicated in Fig. 1 and consists of the clamping jaws 5656 arranged between them to clamp tight the rim of the hand wheel 18 when a hand lever 58 is operated. The securing means thus provided sufliees in satisfactorily securing the gage when cutting light work and when the cable is perfectly taut. In the event of the cutting of heavy piles however, the stretch of the cable when the pile is jogged against the gage is sufficient to cause a shift ing of the gage from correct position. By the employment of my improved gage clamping device just described the gage may rigidly be clamped directly to the table to withstand any shock to which the gage is subjected thereby to insure of accurate positioning of the pile.
Having described my invention I claim:
1. A machine of the character described having a supporting frame and a table thereon for the work to be cut, a gage for the work arranged to be movable 011 the table and locking means therefor connected to the gage and operative to effect a clamp ing engagement with the table whereby the gage is rigidly clamped in position.
2. A machine of the character described having a supporting frame and a table thereon for the work to be cut, a gage for the work arranged to be movable on the table, locking parts for the gage connected thereto and supported below the table and actuating means for the locking parts operative to effect a clamping engagement between the locking parts and the table.
3'. A machine of the character described having a supporting frame and a table thereon for the work to be cut, a gage for the work arranged to be movable on the table rear portion, means to move the gage on the table, locking means for the gage connected thereto and actuating means therefor operative to cause the locking means to effect clamping engagement with the table, said actuating means being extended forwardly to the front of the machine.
a. A machine of the character described having a supporting frame and a table thereon for the work to be cut, a gage for the work arranged to be movable on the table, said table having a guide-slot therein, a guide element on the gage fitted to the slot, an attachment piece secured to the gage and depending therefrom beneath the table, an engaging part arranged to engage the under surface of the table, an actuating cam adapted to work between the attachment piece and engaging part to exert an upward force on the engaging part and downward force on the attachment piece to effect clamping engagement with the upper and lower surfaces of the table rigidly to secure the gage and means to operate the actuating cam.
5. A machine of the character described having a supporting frame and a table thereon for the work to be cut, a gage for the work arranged to be movable on the table, said table having a guide-slot therein, a guide-element on the gage fitted to the slot, an attachment piece secured to the gage and depending therefrom beneath the table, opposed ears on the attachment piece, an actuating shaft fitted tosaid ears, a locking cam slidably keyed on the actuating shaft and confined between the ears, and means to rotate the actuating shaft to cause the locking cam to effect the clamping of the gage in position.
6. A machine of the character described having a supporting frame and a table thereon for the work to be cut, a gage for the work arranged to be movable on the table, said table having a guide-slot therein,
a guide element on-the gage fitted to the slot, an attachment piece secured to the gage and depending therefrom beneath the table, opposed ears on the attachment piece, an actuating shaft suitably journaled and fitted to said ears, a locking cam slidably keyed on the actuating shaft, a two piece engaging part interposed between the cam and the table under portion, adjustable connections between the two pieces forming said part, an operating shaft journaled at the front of the machine, connections between the operating and the actuating shafts, an operating lever on the operating shaft and means to move the gage on the table.
