To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, JOHN KANE and Former J. COUCH, both of Rochester, in the county of Monroe and have invented certain new and useful improvements in Ironing-Machines; and we do to be a full clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specifica tion, and to the referenconumerals marked thereon. i
@ur invention has for its purpose to improve the construction of ironing machines of the type that includes. generally a pair of relatively movable ironing members, which can be moved into and out of ironing relation with each other, while one, of the mom hers is movable laterally with respect to the other for the purpose of bringing it to a readily accessible position for locating the work previous to the ironing operation or for removing it after such operation.
A further purpose of the improvement is to afiord a strong and rigid construction particularly adapted for application to small presses.
An additional object of the invention consists in providing an arrangement that can be economically manufactured and which insures proper movement and cooperation of the ironing members irrespective of the conditions under which theyact.
To these and other ends the invention consists in certain improvements and combinations of parts, all as will be hereinafter more fully described, the novel features being pointed out in the claims at the end of the specification.
ln' the'drawings: Figure 1 is a view in front elevation showing a pressing machine equipped with a preferred embodiment of the invention; Fig. 2 is aside elevation, with the parts in normal position; previous to positioning the work; Fig. 3 is a similar view with the ironing members in ironing relation; Fig. 4 is a sectional view taken in a horizontal plane substantially on the line. 9 of Fig. 8, and Fig. 5 is a sectional view taken in a horizontal plane on'line 5-5 ofldig. 3.
Similar reference numerals in the several figures indicate the same parts lln the present embodiment of the improvements the frame of the machine in- State of New York, v
cludes a base i and vertically arranged standards 2, which. extend upwardly from opposite sides of the base and are mounted in brackets 3. The standards 2 support an ironing member at their upper end in the form of a heated chest 4 to which a heating medium is supplied through suitable pipes as customary in this class of apparatus.
"5 designates a second ironing member in the storm of a heated bed that is movable straightened to move the lower pressing member upwardly into engagement with the heated chest, while the toggle joint may be broken to release the movable pressing memher through a supplemental treadle ll which is pivotally mounted on the principal controlling lever 9. The post 6 is also pivotally associated with a connecting frame 12, pivotally mounted upon a Li -shaped supporting device 13, which is horizontally disposed and attached at its forward portions to the vertical standards 2, The connecting frame 12 is provided with fiuidconnections whereby the heating medium may be supplied to the movable pressing member or bed while at the same time permittin the required movements of the latter. 'l e movable ironing member carries handles lthy which it can be manually operated away from the stationary chest in the manner shown in Fig. 2 in order to permit positioning the work thereon. To insure proper movement and positioning of the heated bed we employ a guide which is preferably in the form of a closed loop, attached to the standards 2 by means of arms 15, and embodying a rear portion 16 lying in a horizontal plane and a front portion'l7 which is inclined downwardly from the portion 16. A ouder preferably in the form of a spring 18 is arranged at the forward end of the guide. The support 6 for the movable ironing member has fixed thereon a block 19 which travels in the guide back and forth and engages the ends of the latter in order to limit the lateral movements of the heated bed. The block 19 carries a downwardly projecting member or extension 20 to engage the spring 18, in the manner shown in Fig. 2, so as to prevent any shock when the support and heated bed are brought forward. The block 19 is also provided with a Work- holder 21, and 22 is a spring connecting an arm 23 on the block with the rear Wall of the guide, and serving to assist in returning the movable ironing member to a vertical or ironing position.
The structure which We have described presents a novel and improved arrangement that has been found highly efiicient with machines of'this character, both as to efiic iency of operation and durability of the structure. The machine has been reduced to as few parts as possible, and these are arranged with such regard to compactness and strength as to aiford a construction that Will stand up under rough usage and at the same time give a high quality of work.
We claim as our invention:
1. In an ironing machine, the combination With a frame comprising a base, a pair of vertical standards one of which extends up- Wardly from each side of the base, an iron.- ing member supported on the upper end of said standards, a supporting device attached relates to said vertical standards, a connecting with a frame comprising a base, a pair of vertical standards which extend upwardly from opposite sides of the base, an ironing member supportedon the upper end of said standards, a horizontally arranged U-shaped supporting device attached to said Vertical standards, a connecting frame svvingingly mounted on the supporting device, a support pivotally associated With the connect ing frame, an ironing'member mounted on the support, and means for efiecting movement of the last mentioned ironing member to bring it into ironing relation with the first named ironing member.
