To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, CYRIL A. CHns'rER'roN, a citizen of the Dominion of Canada, and aresident of Somerset, in the Province of Manitoba and Dominion of Canada, have invented a new and improved Envelop, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.

This invention relates to stationery and has particular reference to a new and useful form of inclosure or envelop for letters or the like, it being understood that I do not wish to be unnecessarily limited in the scope or use of the improvement. For the purpose of illustration, however, it may be un derstood that the envelop or wrapper is in tended primarily for first-class mail matter.

Among the objects of the invention is to provide an envelop that is adapted to be sealed or secured by a riveting or stapling machine without gumming the sealing flap.

With the foregoing and other objects in view the invention consists in the arrangement and combination of parts hereinafter described and claimed, and while the invention is not restricted to the exact details of construction disclosed or suggested herein, still for the purpose of illustrating a practical embodiment thereof reference is had to the accompanying drawings, in which like reference characters designate the same parts in the several views, and in which 7 Figure 1 is a plan view of the envelop blank laid out flat; Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the same with the several flaps partially folded; Fig. 3 is a similar view showing the overlapping of a portion of the flaps in final position; Fig. 4c is a perspective view of the envelop closed and sealed: and Fig. 5 is a vertical transverse section of the same on the line 55 of Fig. 4:.

Referring now more particularly to the drawings, 1 show an envelop comprising'a front panel 10 to which are permanently and integrally connected a series of flaps adapted to be folded along the lines indicated'by dotted lines. The flaps include a bottom flap 11 foldable along the line 12, so as to lie against the inner face of the front panel. Said bottom flap, however, is provided at its free end with a sealing tongue 13 foldable. outwardly and downwardly around a line 14. so as to lie loosely against the outer face of the bottom'flap when'the Specification of Letters Patent.

No gum is applied to the flap 11 or its tongue 18, except as it is carried by other flaps.

At the ends of the front panel, are end flaps 15 and 16 foldable inwardly around lines 17 and 18 respectively. Gum is applied to the lower edges of the inner faces of these flaps, as indicated at 19, the gum extending throughout the portion only of the rear edges of these flaps, beginning at the folding lines 17 and 18 and terminating substantially halfway between said lines and the tip ends 20 of said end flaps. Thereby, there is left an ungummed portion 21 along said lower edges. The tips 20, however, are gummed as indicated at 22 and 23. The gum at 19 and 22 of the flap 15, causes this flap to adhere to the outer face of the bottom flap 11 and the outer face of the tongue 13, respectively, while the gum applied at 19 and 23 to the end flap 16 causes this flap to adhere to the outer surface of the flap 11 and the outer surface of the tip end 20 of flap 15 respectively. It will be observed, however, that the ungummed portions 21 of the end flaps will insure that the free end of the tongue 13 will not be pasted down, but will be available for the introduction of a stapling machine or the like, as will appear later in detail.

The flap 24 extending outwardly along the line 25 from the upper edge of the front panel corresponds to the usual sealing flap of an ordinary envelop, but unlike the usual envelop, this flap is not necessarily gummed. It will be understood, however, that in the making up of the envelop for commercial purposes, all of the flaps will be sealed or gummed, as above described, with the exception of the sealing flap 24. The contents of the letter will be introduced as usual, and then to finally close or seal the envelop, the sealing flap 24: will be folded down on the outside, as shown in Fig. 1, the point 24 of the sealing flap overlapping the tip ends 20 of the end flaps and the tongue 13. A clenchable fastener or staple 26 is then passed through the overlapping point, tips, and tongue just referred to, as shown fully in Figs. 4 and 5. Since the tongue and the tips gummed directly to the outside of the same are not secured to the bottom flap 11, it will be noted that the stapling machine or other device may be easily slipped beneath the tongue for the purpose of applying the fastener.

I claim:

1. The herein described envelop comprising a front panel, a bottom flap foldable against the inner face of the front panel, a sealing tongue carried by the end of the bottom flap and foldable outwardly and downwardly upon the outer face thereof, said sealing tongue being free from the bottom flap except along its folding line connection therewith, end flaps foldable inwardly from the ends of the front panel upon the outer face of the bottom flap and gummed thereto from their folding lines to points substantially midway between said folding lines and the tips of the end flaps, said tips of the end flaps being gunimed respectively to the outer surface of the sealing tongue and the outer surface of one of the tips, but being otherwise free from the bottom flap, and a sealing flap foldable rearwardly and downwardly over the end flaps and tongue in position to be secured to the reinforcements provided by the overlapping of the sealing tongue and tip ends of the end flaps.
