' ROLLER-SKATE.
Specicatio ers Patent. Patented Feb. 27., 1917.
Application filed May 27, 1.916. Serial N o. 100,246.
This invention relates to improvements' in the construction of roller skates.
In carrying out my invention it is my` purpose to produce a roller skate which shall be of an extremely simple, cheapl and durable construction and which may be easily and quickly applied and firmly held in position when applied.
Another object of the invention is to produce a roller skate wherein the wheels may revolve in a practically noiseless manner and also whereby the skate may be provided with anydesired number of wheels. v With the above and other objects in view the improvement resides in the construction, combination and arrangement of parts set forth in the following specification and fallf ing within the scope of the appended claim-s.
In the drawings: y Figure 1 is a view of a skate constructed in accordance with the present invention,
Fig. 2 is a sectional view approximately on the line 2*2 ofFig. 1,
Fig. 3 is a sectional view approximately similar to Fig. v2 but showing the arrangement of the non-threaded axles, and
Fig. 4 is a substantially similar sectional view showing the arrangement of a single axle which is not provided with the antifrictional bearings.
The foot plate 1 of my 'improved skate,
at the heel and -toe portions thereof is'provided with downwardly extending bracket members 11 and 12 respectively which are arranged in spaced pairs and each of which is provided with an opening 13, and the' outer face of each of the brackets, -is formed with an annular flange 14 that surrounds the opening 13, and each of the said flanges is formed with an inner central continuous groove 14. The flanges 14 are each provided wilthan orifice 15 which communicates with the groove 14 in the said flange and which is normally closed by a removable plug-16. The axle for the front and rear wheels preferably comprises two substantially. ferred form of the device are'in the nature of bolts; that is, comprise members having `as a screw driver.
- of the hub member 20 of wheels 21.
similar members which 4in the pre-l rounded shanks which are threaded, as at 15,', and enlarged rounded heads 16- provided with ke'rfs 17 whereby the same may be rotated by a suitable instrument such Each of the rounded heads 1,7 is provided with a continuous pev ripheral groove -or channel 18, and these channels are adapted to4 receive anti-frictional bearings 19 which are passed through,
the orifices 15 in the flange of each of the bracket members and which contact with the angular side wall provided by the grooves 14. adapted to be screwed in the threadedbore ach of the hubs is provided with a plurality of 'radially disposed spokes 22 having an integral rim y23.
l/Vithin this rim is arranged a compressibletread 24, and the said tread may be retained in the channel of the rim through they medium of binding elements 25 which pass through the said rim and contact with the said tread. As shown in the drawings the annular tread 24 may have its inner face provided with a continuous rib 26 and the rim 23 may be centrally rovided with a `continuous channel 27 to receive the said rim.
In Fig. 3 of-the drawings the constructionjissubstantially similar to that just described but the shanks 29 of the axle members are smooth or non-threaded. The hub for the axles 29 has its bore smooth, the said hub being provided with binding elements,l
such as screws 3l which contact with the said axles to secure the wheel 32 to the said axles. Y l
In Fig. 4 of the drawings the axle 33 is in the nature of a rod which has its opposite ends centrally lprovided with threaded orifices to receive the shanks of threaded bolts 34, which also pass through caps 35 and force the fsaid caps against the outer sides of the bracket members 11 and 12. The hub for the axles is secured by the binding elements similar to the binding elements 31 whereby the wheels may be effectively connectedV with the axles.
Having thus-described the invention, what I claim is:
1. A roller skate" including a' foot plate, said plate having depending brackets at the toe and heel portion thereof, efach of said brackets having an opening and a groove surrounding the opening, axles for the hubs, each axle comprising two similar members each including a heads having peripheral channels, the shank of each of the axles adapted to be passed through the `opening in one of the brackets and to have its head received in the groove of the bracket, anti-rictional balls in the channels in the heads of the axles and contacting with the side walls of the grooves, and means, between the hubs of the wheels and the axles for sustaining the said axles in said hubs.
Q. In' a 'roller skate, a foot plate having depending brackets arranged in spaced pairs at the toe and heel portion thereof, said plate between thebrackets being reinforced,
shank and ahead and said Lair/,7er
wheels, axles for the wheels, each of said axles comprising two similar members journaled in openings one in each of the brackets, said wheel including a flanged rim, a hub and spokes connecting the rim with the hub, said hub adapted to receive the alining axle members, means between the hub and said axles for securing the axles to the hub, a iexible tread for each of the rims of each. of the wheels, and means upon the 'rims coacting with the treads for sustaining treads on the rims.
ln testimony whereof l aiiix my signature.
vgiorni HARTMAN.
