To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES P. SAVAGE, a citizen'of the United States, residing at South Tacoma, in the county of Pierce and State of Washington, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Tie- Clasps; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled'in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same. i to olasps, particularly'of that general class commonly known as tie clasps.
The principal object of the invention is to provide a clasp for holding the free ends of neckties to the front of .the shirt of the wearer, said clasp being hidden behind the tie so that it cannot be seen by the casual observer.
Another object of the invention is to improveupon devices of this character now in use by the provision of adevice which will be simple, strong, durable and comparatively inexpensive-in construction, and one which will be efiicient and reliable in operation, and well adapted to'the purpose for which it is designed.
With these and other objects in View, the invention consistsof certain novel features of construction and the combination and arrangement of parts as willbe hereinafter fully described and claimed.

In the embodiment illustrated, the reference numeral 1 designates the body member of the device, which is preferably U-shaped in construction and havingspaced arms 2 and 3 forming in effect a recess between the same. i The arm 2 has its free end flared outwardly, and is provided with a longitudinally extending slot 4, the side edges of member 7 maybe an integral Specification of Letters Patent. which near the outer end thereof are shaped to form suitable bearing portions 5, in which the trunnions 6 of a clamping member to be described are mounted.
Rigidly fixed or secured in any suitable manner to the free end of the other arm 8 of the base member 1 is a pronged member or pin 7, the latter being arranged adj acent and parallel to the same. This pronged part of the arm 3, or it may-be soldered thereto, and bent upon itself to the aforementioned position with respect to said arm 3.
The arms 2, and 3 are provided on their side edges with inwardly extending flanges 8 and 9, which serve to prevent lateral displacement of a compressible, member 10, the latter being disposed between said arms 2 and 3, andpreferably formed from a substantially U-shaped strip of spring metal.
The clamping member heretofore mentioned having trunnions 6, comprises a right angular lever 11 having a compressing arm or cam member 12 extending at right angles from the pivoted end of one of its arms. The free end of the other arm of the lever 11 is provided on its inner face with a recess 13 which is adapted to be disposed in abutting relation to the free end of the pronged member 7, when said lever is in tion.
' In using the device, the pronged member 7 is inserted through the free ends of a necktie from the inner or rear sides thereof, it of course being understood that the lever 11 is in its open position, and the arms 2 and 3 of the 'Ushapedbody member. 1 are disposed on opposite sides of the outer overlapped edge of the shirt. ,When the clasp has been thus positioned, thelever 11 is closed, thereby moving the arm 12 into engagement with thecompressible member 10 and causing the same to move into clamping engagement with said edge of the shirt. At the same time the free end of the lever is moved across the opening between the arm 3 of the body member 1 and the pronged member 7 and into the hereinbefore described position relative to the free end of said pronged member. Owing to the resiliency of the compressible member 10, the parts will remain in their respective positions, thereby preventing the free ends of the tie from flapping outside of the coat of the wearer, but firmly holding them in clamped relation with respect to the shirt.
its closed posi- From the foregoing description, it may be seen that the objects of the invention have been effectively carried out, a tie clasp having been provided which is invisible to the eye of the casual observer.
As various changes in form, proportion, and the minor details of construction may be resorted to Without departing from the spirit of this invention, I do not Wish to be limited to the structure herein shown and described other than that set forth in the appended claims.
I claim:
1. A device of the class described comprising a U-shaped body member, a pronged member fixed to the free end of one of the arms of the latter and arranged adjacent and parallel to said arm, a compressible member disposed between the arms of said body member, a right angular 1ever pivotally mounted on the other arm of said body member and having an arm at the pivoted end thereof adapted to engage said compressible member for compressing the same, the free end of said lever being provided With a recess therein for receiving the free end of said pronged member when the for mer is disposed in abutting relation to the latter.
2. A shirt and tie clasp of the class described comprising a body member having a recess therein adapted to receive a portion. of the shirt, tie engaging pronged member rigidly attached to said body member, and a lever pivotally mounted upon said body member and having a cam member at the pivoted end thereof disposed Within said recess and adapted to clamp the shirt therein, the free end of said lever being provided with a recess for receiving the free end of said pronged member when the former is in its operative position.
