JOSEPH LANE, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
IMPROVEMENT IN GARDEN-TOOLS.
SPECIFICATION.
I, JOSEPH LANE, of the city of Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a certain new and useful Weeding- Tool, of which the following is a full description, reference being had to the accompanying drawing making a part of this specification, in which the instrument is represented in perspective.
In the drawing, A represents the handle of the tool, which may be about four feet long. B is a spring-jaw secured to the handle at h. The lower end of the handle forms a stationary jaw, 70. a a are pieces of rubber or other suitable material secured to the inside of the jaws, which jaws, in their natural position, may be about an inch apart. C is a lever, pivoted, at b, to the standard 0, which is secured to A. d is a piece of wire, one end of which is fastened to one end of C. This wire passes through A and B, and is secured to B or provided with a head. 0 is another wire, one end of which is secured to the lever C at i the other end may be provided with a ring, g,- and this wire 0 may be kept in place by means of eyes f secured to A. The jaw B is operated by means of these two wires d e and the lever C.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 124,001, dated February 27, 1872 antedated February 5, 1872.
The tool is designed to be used in pulling small weeds while the operator can remain in an upright, or nearly upright, position. III use the handle is to be grasped by one hand, while the jaw B is to be operated by the other hand at g. The end of the tool having been so placed that the weed to be pulled will be between the jaws, the jaw B can be brought quickly against the jaw k by pulling the wire e, one finger having been passed through 9, when the Weed will be clasped by the jaws, and, by lifting the tool, will be easily pulled from the ground.
The tool can be passed along the side of small plants without injuring them, and weeds can be rapidly pulled without materially fatiguing the operator.
What I claim as new is as follows:
The tool herein described, consisting of the parts A, k, B, C, cl, and e, constructed and ar ranged to operate substantially as and for the purpose specified.
