To all whom it may concern."
Be it known that 1. JOHN C. MERRILL, a citizen of the United States. residing at San Martin. in the county of Santa Clara and State of California. have invented a new and useful Pump, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention appertains to pumps. and aims to provide a novel and improved mechanism for pumping water or other liquid from a well.
It is also the object oi theinvention to provide a pump of simple and inexpensive construction. consisting of but few parts, and operable in a simple yet efl'ective man ner.
With the foregoing and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hcreinaiter described and claimed. it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed. can be made within the scope of what is claimed. without departing from the spirit of the invention.
The invention is illustrated in the accompanving drawing. wherein-- l igure 1 is a vertical section oi the pump, portions being broken away and others be ing shown in elevation.

ln carrying out the invention, reterence being had particularlv to Fig. 1. the lower end of the eduction pipe 1 for the water or other liquid is connected by a coupling or union 2 with the upper end of a lower vertical pipe 3. an annular valve seat {being 7 provided within the pipe 3 ad acent its up till per end ard a check valve 5 being seatable thereon to support the column or head of water within the pipe 1.
T hrea d edl y or otherwise engaged upon the lower end 01'' pipe 3 is a ring 6 having a. lower inturncd flange or lip 7 providing a valve seat. and a second ring 8 s threadedly or otherwise engaged upon the pipe 3 imimcdiately above the ring 6. The two rings ti and 8 are employed tor clamping leather or equivalent cups 9 thercbetwe n which ex tend in opposite directions The flange l provides a seat for a clack valve 10, the leather of which is clamped between the lower end of the pipe 3 and the flange 7.
A vertical. reciprocatory pump cylinder or barrel 11 surrounds the lowerportion of the pipe 3 and the rings .64 and cups 9 provide a stationary piston fitting snugly within the barrel 11 which is reciprocated vertically by means of a vertical pump rod 12 having its lower end bifurcated or forked so as to straddle the pipes 1 and 3. The lower terminals of the prongs 13 'of-the fork are bolted or otherwise fastened. as at 14. to the upper end of the cylinder 11 and a ring 15 within the upper end of said cylinder. The pump rod 12 is reciprocated by any suit able mechanism.
Threadedly or otherwise engaged upon the lower end of the cylinder 11 is a ring or band 16 having a lower inturned flange or lip 17 forming a seat for a clack valve 18 which has'its leather clamped between the l p 17 and the lower end of the cylinder 11. Thus. the lower ends of the pipe 3 and cylinder 11 are provided with upwardly opening check valves.
It will be noted that the rod 12 is upon the exterior of the pipe 1, and that no I packing is necessary for the pump rod. the
only contacting portions of the pump being, the cylinder 11 and piston carried by the lower end of the pipe 3. When the cylinder 11 is moved downwardly. the valve 10 remains seated, and the chamber within the lower portion of the cylinder between the piston and valve 18 being enlarged, will create a partial vacuum therein. thus opening the valve 18 and sucking the liquid into the lower portion of the cylinder. Then, when the cylinder is moved upwardly. the valve 18 remains seated by the pressure, and the liquid is raised and Forced past the valve 10 into the pipe 3. thereby raising the column of water in the pipes 1 and 3. Thus, as the cylinder 11 is reeiprocated, it elevates the water or other liquid.
in Fig. 2, a double acting pump is illustrated. the two pipes 3 being connected with the coupling 2 by means of a (coupling 19, there being two of the cylinders 11 which reciprocate in opposite directions.
The operating mechanism for the cylinders 11 embodies a concrete or other suitable base 20 provided upon the surtace of the soil surrounding the. well. and upon which sills 21 are mounted,said sills car-=- till or other motive fluid by means of a pipe 29 having a valve 30 for controlling the flow of-fluid. When the turbine 28 is opaerated, it rotates the gears 25, whereby the pitmen 24 impart opposite reciprocatory' movement to the rods 12 for actuating the what is claimed as new is pistons 11, thereby to provide a double act ing pump, so that a practically continuous upward flow of water is'provided.
