PIN-GUARD.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, ROBERT WnsT,-a citizen of the United States, residing at Port Huron, in the county of St. Clair and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pin- Guards, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to a guard particularly for use on hat pins to cover the piercing point and thereby protect bystanders against injury by the piercing point.

While the invention is primarily designed to accomplish the said end, yet it also serves as a loss preventing device as it grasps the pin shank and cannot be readily dislodged therefrom.

I particularly aim to provide an article of this nature having grips of friction materail, like rubber. to receive the pin shank between them, and if desired, to provide a container for the grip in the form of sections hinged and fastened together.

With the above, and additional objects, such as will hereinafter appear, in view, the invention has been embodied in one preferred form as illustrated in the accompanying drawings and hereinafter described.

Referring specifically to the drawings, wherein like reference characters designate like or similar parts for the purposes of explanation of the use of my improved guard, a hat pin is shown in Fig. 1 of which 1 is the piercing shank and 2 the head. This pin is to be taken as conventionally representing the style used by ladies and it is to be understood that the head 2 may be of any suitable or desired design.

The guard preferably has a plurality of rips 6, preferably made of rubber or other friction material. The blocks within the guard are separate from each other and Specification of Letters Patent.

preferably held in place by a suitable container or casing formed of sections 7 and 8, which are hinged together at 9. Any suitable means may hold the sections closed and against pivotal movement and to this end may be in the form of a latch leaf 10 of spring metal adapted to cooperate with a lug 12. The lug 12 is carried by the section 7, while the latch 10 is carried by the section 8. It will be noted that the ends of the sections 7 and 8 are curved or formed so as to substantially completely close the grip member 6. One end, however, of the sections 7 and 8 are cut away to provide an insert aperture 13 which is in the line of the abutting faces of grips 6. 7

With the construction shown, it will be realized that as the pin 1 is passed through the aperture 13, it will extend intermediate the abutting faces of the grip 6 and which frictionally grips or grasps the shank. As a result the guard is maintained in place protecting a bystander against injury from the point of the shank and also serving as a loss preventing device for the pin.

Since the grips are removable and similar in shape and size, they may be reversed in the event the abutting faces of the grips 0pposite opening 13 become worn or dilated.

As stated, any suitable form of easing or housing may be provided for the grip and for instance as suggested in Fig. 5, the easing is made in one piece as illustrated at 14:, with the grip 6 being inserted and fastened in any suitable manner.

Other changes in the details of construction and arrangement of parts may be resorted to within the spirit and scope of the invention, as defined by the appended claims.

I claim 1. A guard of the class described having a casing, a plurality of separate, inherently yieldable, removable grips within the easing, inwardly extending means on the casing to prevent bodily movement of the grips relatively to the casing, said casing having an insert opening, and the said grips having faces in. abutting relation opposite said openings to receive and grip a pin between them.
