A TTORIVEYS GEORGE A. GREENE, OF ROGERS, TEXAS.
INCINERATOR-CLOSET.
Specification of Letters Patent.
- Patented May 28, 1918.
Application filed July 5, 1917. Serial No. 178,590.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE A. GREENE, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Rogers, in the county of Bell and State of Texas, have invented new and useful Improvements in Incinerator-Closets, of which the following is a specification.
My invention is an improvement in incinerator closets, and has for its object to provide a device of the character specified for the purpose of receiving human excreta, designed and constructed so that the contents may be dried out and burned up without handling or removing same, wherein a closed retainer or vault is provided, of fireproof material, as, for instance, metal, concrete or the like, for receiving human excreta, and provided with flues for causing a draft through the casing to dry, deodorize and disinfect the excreta to put it in condition for incineration.
In the drawings is shown a vertical section through the improved closet.
In the present embodiment of the invention, a retainer or vault l is provided, of substantially rectangular, round or other shape in cross section, and of a fireproof material, such, for instance, as metal, concrete or the like, and the said retainer has an opening 2 which may be closed by a cover 3, and a water seal is provided in connection with the cover.
The opening is encircled by a ring 4 having a flange 5 at its lower end which is secured to the top of the retainer about the opening 2, and this flange has an upstanding rib 6 coaxial with the ring and spaced there'- from and adapted to contain water. The cover has a depending flange 7 which depends into the water and makes a tight clo sure. The ring is also provided with an inwardly extending flange 8 at its top, and a seat ring 9 rests upon this flange.
A flue 10 leads upwardly from the casing at the opposite end from the ring l, the said flue extending downwardly into the casing about half the depth thereof or any desired depth and to a suitable height above the re tainer. As shown, the closet is arranged within a building 11 of suitable size, and the flue extends outside of the building.
A cowl 12 is arranged at the top of the flue, the said cowl opening at opposite sides of the flue, and dampers are provided for the opposite ends of the cowl. 13 are mounted on the ends of a lever 14 which is pivoted to the flue, as indicated at 15, and the dampers are inclined outwardly so that when one is closed the other is open.
A counter-weight 16 is provided in connection with the lever 14, and when the wind is in a direction that would blow down the flue were the cowl open, the damper at that end of the cowl will be closed, so that the draft will always be upward through the flue.
An air inlet 17 is connected with the opposite end of the casing from the flue, the said inlet extending outside the building, and a deflector 1&8 is secured within the retainer above the opening. Air entering the retainer must pass inwardly and thence downwardly. Since the casing is air-tight and the cover is sealed with the water seal no offensive odors will be given out, and the current of air passing through the casing will dry the sewage, deodorize and disinfect the same.
At suitable intervals the dry matter may be burned by means of oil, shavings, wood or other fuel which may be introduced into the casing.
I claim:
A device of the character specified, a casing having an inlet in its top, an annular flange secured to the top of the casing in line with the inlet thereof, a ring extending upwardly from the inner edge of the annular flange and having an inwardly extending flange at its top, a rib projecting upwardly from the outer portion of the annular flange coaxial with the said upstanding ring and spaced therefrom, a seat ring supported on the inner flange at the top of the upstanding ring, and a cover extending over the seat ring and inlet and having a depending flange entering the space formed between the upstanding ring and rib.
