Description

Pile-Drivers.
Patented July'lfi, (872.

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN T. BALDWIN, OF PETALUMA, CALIFORNIA.
IMPROVEMENT I N FILE-DRIVERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 129,083, dated July 16, 1872.
SPECIFICATION.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN T. BALDWIN, of Petaluma, county of Sonoma, State of California, have invented Improvements in Pile- Drivers; and I do hereby declare the following description and accompanying drawing are sufficient to enable any person skilled in the art or science to which it most nearly appertains to make and use'my said invention or improvements without further invention or experiment. Y
My improvements in pile-driving machines consist in suspending the vertical guide-poles or monkey-guides from a suitable frame at some point between the top and bottom of the guides, so as to permit of their angular adjustment for driving what is known as batter piles, or piles which serve as braces, and
r are necessarily driven at an angle.
In order to more fully illustrate and explain my invention, reference is had to the accompanying drawing forming apart of this specification, in which a perspective view of my pile-driver is represented, showing the improvements.
' A A represent a strong frame, which is properlymade and braced to support the guidepoles; and in order to conform to the shape of the guide-poles and their braces one side of it is made vertical and the opposite one at an angle, as shown. B B are the vertical guidepoles or monkey-guides, between which the driving apparatus slides; and O O are the braces,
. which extend downward at an angle, passing upon the opposite or inclined side of the frame. The guides B and braces G are united at some point between the top and bottom by a square frame, D, and this frame is hinged or. otherwise jointed or journaled in the upper end of the frame A, so as to allow the guides and braces to be moved as upon a center.
I prefer to suspend the guides and braces at about the middle point, or perhaps a little below that point; but this will always be determined more or less by the height of the monkey-guides and the height of the supporting-frame. To steady the lower end of the guides and braces I employ circular tracks or quadrants E E in the usual way.
I am aware that post-drivers have heretofore been suspended from a frame, and that their bases were steadied and guided by quadrants similar to those above described; but the point of suspension has always been from the topot the guides. This is well enough in post-drivers, but the great height to which the monkey-guides are carried in pile-drivers will not permit of this suspension.
For piling railroad tracks some device of this character is necessary in order to permanently drive the batter piles and render them firm.
Having described my invention, I desire to secure by Letters Patent- The guide-poles B and braces 0, when suspended from a frame, A, at some point between the top and bottom of the guides, for the purpose specified.
JOHN T. BALDWIN.
