- This invention has relation to foot rests or the like, and has for an object to provide a device of this character which is extremely simple in construction and which is designed for use in connection with a chalr of any kind having no operable connection with the chair, but which may be adjusted to any angle desired.

To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, WILLIAM C. WaLKun, a citizen of the United States, resldmg at Meredith, in the county of Bellmap and I State of New Hampshire, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Leg and Foot Rests, of which the following is. a specification.
This invention has relation to foot rests or the like, and has for an object to provide a device of this character which is extremely simple in construction and which is designed for use in connection with a chalr of any kind having no operable connection with the chair, but which may be adjusted to any angle desired.
Another object of the invention is to provide a foot rest including a supporting leg, and a foot rest extending laterally therefrom whereby the feet and legs may be supported upon the rest while the person is sitting in a chair without the necessity of operably connecting the foot rest to the chair in any manner whatsoever.
A still further object of the invention is to provide a foot rest including a supporting leg and a foot rest adapted to extend laterally therefrom with pivoted bracing means connecting the foot rest to the supporting leg, and a locking means of a novel type for securely loclglng the foot rest to the supporting leg agalnst relatlve rotary or pivotal motion.
In addition to the foregoing my invention comprehends improvements in the details of construction and arrangement of the parts to be hereinafter more fully described and particularly set forth in the appended claims.

With reference to the drawings, 10 indicates the supporting leg in thenature of a rectangular oblong elementcovered on one side with felt, or other soft material as indicated at 11. Extending from opposite longitudlnal edges'thereof isa pair of studs 12. The face of the supporting-leg covered with the material'llis provided adjacent opposite longltudlnal edges with openings 13, and covering said openings are plates 14 formed with openings 15registering with the openings 13, the material of the plate ad acent the opening 15 being struck inwardly as at 16. Theplates 14: are secured to the supporting legs by any suitable fastening means.
The device also includes a foot rest 17 corresponding in width to the width of the supporting legs and preferably slightly longer and covered upon both sides with soft material indicated at 18. A pair of braces are provided, one for each side of the device indicated at 19. One end of each brace is permanently and pivotally secured as at 20 to the longitudinal edges of the foot rest 17 While the opposite ends are provided with laterally extending notches adapted to receive the studs 12 whereby to connect the supporting legs to the foot rest. This connection is established when the foot rest and supporting leg are disposed at relative rightangles and in contact as shown in Fig. 1, the end of the foot rest engaging that face of the supporting leg 10 covered by the material 1.1. The material 11 of the supporting leg is formed with openings registering with the openings of the plate 14, and the end of the foot rest in contact with the supporting leg is provided with a pair of locking or penetrating members indicated at 21. Each member is formed of a strip of material having its terminals bent at rightangles as indicated at 22 and 23. The intermediate portion of the strip is disposed at an angle relative to the angular relation of the terminals and is slightly curved. The terminal 22 of the plate is apertured to receive the screw of the penetrating member 24 whereby to secure said angular members to the foot rest. Prior to securing the braces 19 in place, the outwardly extending ends 23 of the locking members are engaged through the openings in the covering 1.1 of.
the supporting leg, and entering into the opening 15 of the plate 14. The braces 19 are then engaged upon the stud and the structure will be rigid. In use the person may recline in a chair and place his or her legs upon the foot rest 17. The foot rest should be of a length to extend approximately from the heel to the knee and the supporting leg 10 should be inclined so as to dispose the center of gravity beyond the outer face thereof. The legs will thus be comfortabl supported, and furthermore the muscles wi 1 be relaxed.
While I have illustrated and described my invention with some degree of articularity, I realize that in practice varlous alterations thereover may be made, and I therefore desire to reserve the right and privilege of changing the form of the details of construction and arrangement of the correlative parts without departing from the spirit of the invention or the scope of the appended claim.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire" to secure by Letters Patent is A foot rest comprising a supporting leg of substantially rectangular configuration having a pair of spaced openings in one face, plates secured over the openings, said plates having integral tongues struck from the center thereof and bent to form right angle extensions adapted to engage the top edges of the openings, the lower ends of the openings, formed by the struck out tongues, being spaced above the lower edges of the openings in the supporting leg, a foot rest extending laterally from the supporting leg, a pair of plates secured to one end of said foot rest, each plate having a right angle extension adapted to be received through the aperture in one plate secured to the supporting leg and adapted to engage the inner face of the plate between the bottom edge of the aperture and the botton of the opening in the leg support, and braces pivotally connecting the foot rest and supporting leg.
