NOTE-BOOK AND MANUSCRIPT HOLDER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Mar. 16, 1920.
Application filed February 12, 1919. Serial No. 276,520.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, J AMES Snnuan, a citizen of the United States, of America, residing at Camden, in the county of Camden and State of New Jersey, have invented new and useful Improvements in Note-Book and Manuscript Holders, of which the following is a specification.
The purpose of the invention is to provide a device for attachment on desks and tables whereby a note book or manuscript from which copy is to be made may be readily supported in a position convement for such copying. To this end, the device comprises a suitable support having means for attaching it to the table, the support being of a holder to be swung to the side of the table and swung down in iolded position against the side thereof. A further object of the invention resides in the provision of a device of this character, which is simple in construction,
durable and effective in operation and inexpensive to manutiacture.
Other and further objects appear in the following description, wherein the invention is set forth in detail.
To the exact construction which is shown and described, the invention is not to be restricted. The right. is reserved to make such changes 01' alterationsas the actual re duction to practice may suggest, in so tar as such changes or alterations are compatible in spirit with the annexed claims.
The same numerals of reference designate the same parts throughout the several figures of the drawings, wherein:
Figure 1 is a perspective view showing the practical application of the invention.
Fig. 2 is a side clevational view of the structure of Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a front elevational view thereof.
Fig. i is a section on the line 4.41-. of Fig. 3.
Fig. 5 is a detailed sectional view showing one of the rubber feet used in connec tion with the device to prevent the movement thereof.
Fig. 6 is a section on the line. 6-6 of Fig. 3.
Referringto the drawings, the invention is shown as comprising a pair of supporting brackets 1 which are attached on one side of the desk 2, these supporting brackets being formed with knobs and so positioned that they stand one above the other with the holes which are formed diametrically through the knob portions in alinement. These brackets 1 slidingly receive a verti cally disposed rod 3 equipped with collars a, adjustable longitudinally along the rod, these collars being placed one above the uppermost bracket 1 and the other below the said bracket, thus providing for limiting longitudinal movement of the rod 3, which its mounting in the bracket 1 provides.
At the upper end, the rod 3 carries an elbow member 6 which is suitably attached to the rod, preferably by having the rod threadingly engaged with one leg of this elbow, the horizontal leg of which thread ingly receives a rod 7 adapted to overhang the desk on which the device is used or to be swung to one side of the desk, the mounting of? the rod 3 in its brackets permitting such shifting of the rod 7. The rod 7 at its extremity carries a removable head 8 and also 1carries mounted thereon an adjustable col- The note book or manuscript holder proper comprises the plates 10 and 11 which are hingedly connected together at their upper ends as indicated at 12. The plate 10 at its lower end is rovided with a foot plate 13 on the underface of which are attached strap members 1st which embrace the rod '7 and secure the plate 13 and its attendant plate 10 to the rod. The plate 11 on its lower edge provided with a pair of spaced rubber feet 15 and provision is made for limiting the distance that the one plate may swing away from the other at the lower ends by attaching to the inner face of the plate 11 a chain or other flexible element 16 which connects with a hook 17 carried on the in nor face of the plate 10.
To secure pages of manuscript or a note book to the plate 10 there is provided a spring clip 18 embracing one edge of the plate 10 and extending for a short distance on the back of said plate and having relativcly great distance on the front of said. plate, the transverse portion of this clip be-v ing engaged in a notch 19 formed in that edge of the plate 10 enrbraced by the clip.
In Fig. 1 the device is shown in operative position. The two plates are separated the distance permitted by the chain 16, and the feet 15 on the lower edge of the late 11 rest on top of the table 2, these feet eing of a material having a high coefficient of frietion serving to prevent sliding of the plate.
The rod 7 overhangs the top of the table 2 and the strap members 1d are permitted to rest on top of the table and thus support the lower end of the front plate 10, the clip 18 of which serves to support on the front plate sheets of manuscript or a note book from which copy is to be made.
In supporting the device in operative position, no strain is imposed upon the rods 7 or 3 and the device is, therefore, held in substantially rigid position.
When not in use the device may be swung to the side of the table as indicated in dotted lines in Fig. l. The plates 10 and 11 are brought together at the lower end and the rod 7 swung laterally with the axis of the rod 3 as a pivot until under it, the rod 7 becomes parallel with the side of the table, when the plates 10 and 11 may be swung outwardly and downwardly to bring the plate 11 adjacent the side of the table with the plate 10 outside of it. The uppermost collar 4- can be adjusted to a position to allow the rod 7 to be lowered below the upper surface of the table, and, therefore, to carry the whole device at a point on the side of the table below the level of the top thereof.
The collar 9 provides for an adjustment that will limit the distance which the foot plate 13 can be moved along the rod 7.
From the foregoing description and the accompanying drawings, it is believed that a clear enough understanding of the invention is to be had to render further description unnecessary.
The invention having been described, what is claimedas new and useful is:
1. A holder for the purpose specified comprising a pair of plates hingedly connected together, one of said plates at the end remote from the hinged connection being provided with a foot plate, a horizontally clisposed rod, strap members surrounding the rod and connected to the foot plate, the
, the onebeing other of the said at the end remote from the hinged connection, a pair of supporting brackets adapted to be positioned one above the other on the side of a piece of furniture, a vertically disposed rod pivotally engaging said brackets and connected with the first said rod, and adjustable means carried by the last said rod and disposed on opposite sides of the two supporting brackets, whereby the two hingedly connected plates may be disposed in an inverted V shape on top of an article of furniture or swung in folded-up position against the side of the latter.
2. A holder for the purpose spccilied c111 bodying a pair of hingedly connected plates, provided with a tool; plate at that end remote from the hinged connection, the other of said plates being provided with resilient feet at the end remote from the hinged connection, a. flexible elcn'ient connecting the two plates adjacent their lower ends, a horizontally disposed rod to which the foot plate is pivotally connected, a removable head and a collar carried by said rod on opposite ends of the foot plate to so. ure the latter against removal therefrom, a pair of supporting b 'ackets adapted for attachmentto a piece of furniture one above the other, vertically disposed rod conncct ing with the first said rod at the end ren'ioi'c from the head and pivotall engaging said bracke", and adjustable collars carried on the last said rod and disposed above the no per and below the lower of said brackets, whereby longitudinal movement of the vertical rod is provided to permit the hingiall mounted plates being set up in an inverted V shape on the top of a piece of furniture, as herein shown, or to be swung in a foldedup position against one side oi the said piece of furniture.
In testimony whereof I aliix my signature.
' JAMES SHEEAN.
