ATTACHMENT FOR FOUNTAIN-PENS.

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, CARL SCHWARTZ, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Sheboygan Falls, in the county of Sheboygan and State of Wisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Attachments for Fountain-Pens; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof.

My invention pertains to new and useful improvements in attachments for fountain pens and similar writing instruments.

An object of this invention is to pro vide a blade attachment for various types of writing instruments, such as fountain pens, pencils and the like, the same being so associated therewith that the blade thereof may be projected beyond one end of the instrument or retained within the length of such instrument. A further object is to provide means for holding such blade attachment in non-rotary sliding engagement with the writing instrument.

A further object of the invention is to provide a simplyconstructed guard structure for housing the point of the blade of the attachment when the same is inoperative.

Still another object of the invention is to provide a retaining clip attachment for fountain pens and similar writing instru ments which, while being slidable on the latter is held against rotation with respect thereto.

A still further important object of the invention is to provide a combined retaining clip and blade attachment for diflerent types of writing instruments.

'With these several objects in view the invention resides in the novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts which will be hereinafter more particularly described and claimed.

associated with one of the same in the accompanylng drawing, it is evident from the foregoing that it may be used in connection with different types of writing instruments. Furthermore various changes may be made in the different parts of the invention with out departing from the principles thereof or sacrificing any of the many advantages. For instance the blade member forming one of the major parts of the invention may be used in the nature of a paper-cutter, a letter opener, or any other blade like device, having a sharpened edge or not as desired.

In the above referred to drawing the reference character pen having the usual ink 1 through which a point 2 projects. To accommodate these standard parts of a fountain pen to receive the attachment forming the invention, the same is provided with a longitudinally extending flattened portion 3 extending throughout the greater portion of the length of the barrel and a pair of longitudinally extending grooves 4 of approximately the same length, the corresponding ends of the grooves, however, having stop shoulders 55. These grooves 4 are disposed one on each side of the flattened portion 3 and parallel theretoand form guides to receive the laterally and inwardly projecting fingers or flanges 6 which are carried by the end edges of a substantial semi-cylindrical blade carrying member 7.

The portion of the inner surface of this blade carrying member 7 mid-way between the end edges thereof has a fiat face 8 for sliding engagement with the longitudinal fiattenedportion 3. The fiat engaging surfaces of the barrel 1 and the carrying member 7 thus cooperate with the grooves 4 and flanges 6 to retain the said carrying member in sliding non-rotative relation to the pen. Likewise the inner surface of a flat blade 9 which projects from the carrying member 7 also co-actively engages with the flattened portion 3 to further aid in holding the part 7 in proper position upon the pen. When in normal inactive position the blade 9 is disposed within the length of the barrel 1, but is readily projectible beyond the butt end thereof as indicated in the broken lines in Fig. 1 by moving the carrying member 7 toward this end. A relatively stationary guard 10 shields the point of the blade 9 containing barrel P designates a fountain when same is in normal position, but when the latter is projected it slides between the guard and the barrel of the pen. In other words the guard is an open-work substantially semi-cylindrical member having its side edge portions bent inwardly toward each other as in the case of the similar portions of the carrying member 7, and like the flanges 6 these parts engage in the grooves 4.

In addition to the blade 9, the member 7 also carries a retaining. clip 11 similar in construction to the ordinary pocket retaining clips of fountain pens, pencils and the like. This clip 11 is constructed of spring metal and extends from the outer edge of the member 7 inwardly and in the direction of-the blade 9, its free end portion being urged toward the latter. IVhen the blade 9 is in projected position the clip 11 is located over the outside of the guard 10 and aids the natural friction existing between the flattened surfaces 3 and 8 and the inner surface of the blade in retaining the latter in operative position.

From the foregoing description taken in connection with the accompanying drawing it will be seen that I have invented a very simply constructed combined blade and clip,

attachment for fountain pens and the like which can be applied thereto without material alterations of ordinary structures.

I claim: g

1. In combination with a writing device, having a pair of longitudinally extending grooves, of a slidable retaining clip, and groove engaging fingers extending from the clip and slidably disposed in the grooves.

2. In combination with a writing device, having a flattened surface, and a pair of longitudinally extending grooves, of a slidable retaining clip having a flat portion for engagement with said flattened surface to prevent rotation thereof, and groove engaging fingers extending from the clip and slidably disposed in said grooves.

3. In combination with a writing device, of a blade carrying member slidable on the device, a blade on the member and projectible beyond one end of the device but normally disposed within the length thereof, a guard secured to the device and shielding the end of the blade when same is in said normal position, and a retaining clip extending from the carrying member in the direction of the blade, said blade being slidable between the guard and the device and the clip movable over the outside of the guard when said blade is projected.

4. In combination with a writing device, of a blade member carried by the device, the blade of the former being projectible beyond one end of the latter, but normally disposed within the length thereof, and means for holding the blade against rotation on the "having a pair of longitudinal extending grooves, of a blade carrying member slidable on the device, groove engaging fingers extending from the carrying member and slidably disposed in said groove, and a blade extending from said member and projectible beyond one end of the device, but normally disposed within the length thereof.

7. In combination with a writing device, having a longitudinally extending surface and a pair of longitudinally extending grooves, of a blade carrying member slidable'on the device, groove engaging fingers extending from the carrying member and slidable in said grooves, and a flat blade carried by said member and engageable with said flattened surface throughout the length thereof, said blade being movable beyond one end of the device, but normally disposed within the length thereof.
