SPARK-PLUG.
Be it known t at L GEORGE O. NIGHs- WANDER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Kansas,'in the county of Seneca and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Spark-Plug, of which the following isla specification. l f
vThis invention relates to new and useful improvements in spark plugs, and the object ovf the invention is to generallysimplify the construction of spark plugs and to provide `nvel means whereby the points of the electrodes will be kept clean vso as toprevent inoperation due to the collection of carbon on the same. y f
A further object .of the invention is to provide la spark plugarranged to receive the gas through the casing thereon and having novel electrode points, one of which is designed to be operated during the compression andexhaust of the. motor, for the purpose -of cleaning the points.
With the above.and other objects in View which will appear xas the ldescription pro-v ceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details ofconstruction' hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood th-at, within the scope of what is claimed, changes in the precise embodiment of the' invention shown can be made without departing from `the spiritof the invention.

Referring to the drawings in detail, in which like reference characters indicate corresponding pan'ts throughout the several views, my 11n-proved spark plug is shown as comprising a casing or shell 10 having an -inwardly offset or vreduced portion 1l provided with external threads 12 by means of which the samecan `be-secured to acylinder of an intern-al combustion engine.
There is thus provided an oppositely facing shoulder 13 adapted to be contacted by an annular rim 14, circumscribing the' tapered bushing of smaller diameter than the interior of the casing, so as to receive" a securing nut- 16 which has interior threaded en- I gagement with thecasing 10 in rder to secure the bushing i'n positlon.l

. in the bushing, a positive electrode 17, the v i end portlon 18 of which is threaded in the .usual manner for receiving a binding nut and for connection with the current conducting wire. This terminal extends 60 through the inner portion of the bushing, which is tapered as indicated at 19 in an opposite direction to the direction of taper of the bushing portion 15, and also formed with an enlarged socket or opening 20, the polnt of the e ectrode 17exten'ding slightly beyond the-.taperedend of the end portion 19. The reduced portion l1 of the casing or shell is provided with. series of openings therethrough as indicated at 21, and is formed at the bottom with inturned langesl 22 designed to retain a fiat electrode 23 in position.- This electrode is in the form of a plate and is adapted to have play between the flanges and the oint of the terminal electrode 17, so as to e ectively clean the points, owing to the reciprocatipn of the plate 23,
' from. the compression and exhaust of the gases within the cylinders to which it is applied.l It is to be understood that the spark 80 gap is formed between the electrode 17 andthe electrode 23-when the latter is in position, retained against displacement by the flanges 22, so that the circuit is grounded 4to the body of the plug and to the cylinder. 85
In use, the gases pass through the openings-21 and into the shell, so that when the current is passed through the electrodes at leased,`in order to` permit explosion of lthe 95 gases at the proper time. Thus, the continual vibration* or'reciproc-ation of the vplate oints and ref tain them in operative condition. It will also be seen that the formation of the innerw() end of the bushing produces a firing chamber between it and the inner wall of the casing at the attaching end-thereof, so that as the gases escape into this chamber throu h e the openings 21, an effective firing of t e gases is rendered possible, the spark igniting the gases and communicating thesame to the cylinder around the electrode 23, owin mtmVYYWV the same .being of smaller diameter t an the interior diameter of thel casing at itsat- 11o' taching portion 11. A spark plug comprising a body in- Cluding an attaching casing, a bushing mounted in the casing, mean's to retain said bushing in position, a positive electrode ex- .tending through the bushing and forming a sparking point, said bushing forming an opening within the body and casing thereof, the lower end ofthe casing being formed with a #lange extending inwardly to provide a central opening, and a second electrode in the form of a plate mounted in the casing and retained `from Adisplacement by said flange, said plate being unattached and cooperating with the first named electrode.
2. A spark plug comprising a casing having an offset portion providing'a shoulder,
