To all whom it mag concern:
Be it known that We,[HoRAon R.'K1Nc and ARTHUR F. ADAMS, citizens of the Dominion of Canada, residing at Vancouver, in the Province of British Columbia, Canada, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Copy-Holders, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates'to a copyholder an belongs to that classthat Inay'be'removably clamped to the edge of a table or the like, as distinguished from those that merely stand on the table, or that form a removable attachment to a-typewriting machine.
It is particularly designed to afford an ample range of extension in any required direction, and to fold alongside the edge of the table when not required for use.
The invention is particularly described in the following specification, reference being made to the drawings by which it is accompanied, in which:
Figure 1 shows the device as secured to the edge of the table, with the offset of the standard, the supporting bar and the copyholder turned to the plane of the edge of the table, as when out of use.
Fig. 2 shows the device as secured to and projecting over the table as for use.
Fig. 3 shows the blank from which the column block is folded, and
Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the table clamp showing the standard partially raised therefrom.
The device comprises the combination with a desk or table clamp A, having a screw a, by which it may be secured. This clamp is preferably stamped from thin sheet metal with corrugations or ribs that will impart the necessary rigidity to it. The upper and lower members of this clamp are apertured to receive a cranked or oifset standard C, with a pin, d, or other provision sustaining the column inthe aperture.
The face of the clamp surrounding the aperture has radial grooves C to receive the pin, d, to retain the column C in various positions of angular movement in the aperture, that the offset portion of the standard C may be retained in position projecting over'the table, or in alinement with its edge, to either side. The rod C is secured to the clamp A by a pin g passed through the lower end of rod C. I
On the upper or oflset portion of the column C is slidably and 'rotatably mounted a bl-ockH, having a set screw by which the block may be secured in any desired-position'of vertical or angularadjustment, and through the same block is slidably'm'ounted a horizontal bar K, with a set screw H by which it may be secured in any desired 'position of endwise adjustment. This block H is for lightness, preferably made from thin sheet metal out, as-shownin} Fig. 3, and bent as indicated by the dotted lines.
One end of this bar Kis bent toabackward angle from the vertical, such as will be convenient for the slope of the copyholder M, which is socketed on this angularly turned end. i
This copyholder M is formed of thin sheet metal having impressed ridges on its outer face to impart a suflicient degree of rigidity. The lower edge is outwardly turned to provide a ledge m on which the copy'may rest. The socket L by which the copyholder is mounted on the angularly turned end of the bar K is either secured to the back of the copyholder, or, as shown in the drawing, is sheared and impressed from its approximate center.
The upper portion of this socket fits the upwardly turned end of the bar K, and the lower part is medially sheared, andthe sides are outwardlyturned to form check strips L, which pass over the diameter of the rod at the bend and retain the copyholder against rotation on the end of the rod in the position indicated in Fig. 2. WVith this provision the copyholder may be lifted on its socket until the lower ends of the check strips L are clear of the bend of the rod, when the copyholder may be turned to dispose its plane parallel to the axis of the rod K as represented in Fig. 1.
Pivotally mounted in the lower part of the copyholder adjacent the outwardly turned edge, are paper engaging clips, N, preferably formed of spring wire bent as shown in Fig. 2. The rivet P by which each clip is shown in the drawing as secured to the back of the copyholder is close to the bend of the flange and to the bend N of the clip, so that the clip exercises its resilience by contact of the bend of the clip with the bend of the copyholder, and therefore only when the clip is turned to the copyholding position: When the clip is turned to a posiextension bars, 0, are pivotally connected to fold' in parallel with the edge of the copyholder, as when not required, or to pro ect from the edge to support any paper of greater width than the copyholder is norv mally provided for.
The device being made only of sheet metal, and of rod metal of uniform section, is simple and cheap, and in the arrangement of its parts is convenient and adaptable to the purpose of its use.
Having'now particularly described our invention, We hereby declare that what we claim as new and desire to be protected in by Letters Patent, is:
1. A copy holder, comprising a sheet 7 holding plate removably socketed on the upwardly angled end of a suitably supported round arm, the socket in the plate being provided with baekwardly turned projections to engage the sides of the -arin -at the bend to prevent rotation of the plate on the upwardly turned end of the arm, but that when lifted from engagement with the bend will allow the plate to be turned on its socket. f
2. A copyholder, comprising a sheet holding plate having an outwardly flanged lower edge, paper engaging clips of resilientwire pivoted in the plate adjacent the flange to turn in the plane of the plate, said clips being bent upward toward the plate and at the bend to conform to the bend of the flange, that the resilience of the clips is supported by the flange when in the upright or paper holding position and are relieved of such support when turned tov either side from such upright position. 1
