Description
C. E. GILBERT AND A. H. CARLSON. THREE WHEEL DUMP CARL APPLICATION FILEDYAPH. a, 1920.
*mf-W//lll/llll/lllllllllm l?? a "It il' ATTORNEY@ THBEEWHEEL DUMP-CART.
To all whom t may concern.'
Be it known that we, CHARLES E. GILBERT Patented Mar. 29, 1921. 72,141.
and Nnnov H. (/AnLsoN, citizens of the at 19, and to the aims of e -shaped nited States, residing a` 293 William St., bracket at the points designated 20 21 de- Bridgeport, and Faireld Ave., Bridgeport, notes braces for the supporting members,
State of Connecticut, have invented an Improvement inA Threeheel Dump-Carts, of which the following is a specification.
his invention provides an uniqueriding 25. As toy of a well known three wheel varietiy. y
cart body, so that when the bod equipped with a :fiat seat, two rear wheels Zontal position its front end rests on cross and a single front wheel. The rear wheels strip 26, the downwardly extending arms of are mounted in a suitable support which 1s which are connected to the Z-shaped supattached' to the underside of the fiat seat. porting members as shown. Cross strip 26, guide post, provided at its upper end with 1n addition to supporting the front end of steering mechanism, such as a cross bar t e cart body olds the Z-shaped supportor a steering wheel, is pivotally mounted 1n ing members in fixed relation with respect 75 the front portion of the flat seat and carries o each other. the front wheel. bell crank lever having a straight arm The object of the present invention is to .an an arm 28 which is yoked about the supply a riding toy of the described variety guide post, as more clearly shown in Fi 3, whic possesses the desirable features of is pivoted to the underside of the flat seat toys of the present type heretofore known in any desired manner, as indicated at 29 and which possesses additional desirable and control lever 3`0 is pivoted to the outer attractive features. To this end, we have end of yoke arm 28 as indicated at 31, and produced a novel three wheel riding toy in t e i.portion of the at seat that is in which is adapted to carry a novel cart body front o the guide post there is an opening upon a running gear, and we have incor- 2 in which the control lever freely slides porated novel mechanism in ourtoy whereby t will be at once apparent that the bell e contents of the cart body can be dumped crank lever need not be yoked about the at will either while moving or while standguide post. Its forwardly extending arm inn, may be straight and the opening in the fiat 90 zThe invention comprises the construction seat may be to the rear of the guide post and arrangement of parts as now to be or the forwardly eXtendin arm may be so fully described and hereinafter specifically ma e and arranged that the bell crank lever claimed. can be actuated from the steering mecha- In the accompanying drawing forming a niSm. So far as the present invention is part of this specilication, concerned, there is a bell crank lever, or Figure 1 is a side elevation of the novel equivalent, which is manipulable from conm? Arm 27 is pivoted between 105 e rear wheels are pivoted to op osite ends e strips as will be understood Near their of a block 15, as indicated at 16.' da shaped rear the fiat strips are bent outward] bracket is attached to the upper face of the and from each other and the outwardly bent block and has upwardly extending arms 17. portions are each bent rearwardly to ro- 18 denotes a spindle carried by arms 17. vi e attaching arms 35 which are positioned 110 he rear end of the Hat seat is sup orted from block ,15 by means of Z-shape supso that arm carries a ivot pin, denoted by 36, and on each oi t e pins are pivoted three toggle arms 37, 38 and 39. The other ends of t e toggle arms are ivoted res ectively to the sides of the cart body, as in icated at 40, to opposite-ends of the tail gate, as indicated at 41, and to lower arms 42 of the Z-shaped su porting members, as indicated at 43.
he manner of dumpin the cart body will be apparent. When t e control lever is given a downward 'ush so that it moves from the positionof ig. 1 to that of Fig. 2, the bell crank lever is thrown on its pivot 27 thereof moves rearwardly and causes the connecting bar to force the tog le arms to spread .from their positions in ig. 1 to their pos tions in Fig. 2. That is, arms 37 and 39 move from each other to tilt the cart body rearwardly, and arm 38 moves rear-wardly and Jforces the tail gate to turn on its pivot rear end of the body.
A coil spring 44 connected at one of its ends to arm 27 as indicated at 45, and at its other end to connecting bar 33, as indicated at 46, will return the cart body to its normal position when the control lever is released, as will be clear.
While a specific embodiment of the invention has been fully described, it is to be understood that such changes in details of construction and arrangement of parts may be made as fall within the scope of the appended claims.
What we desire to claim is:
1. In a dump cart of the character described, a cart body provided with a pivoted tail gate, a contro lever, a bell crank lever pivoted to the control lever and having a connecting -bar pivoted to it, and toggle and be swung from the arms pivoted to the connecting bar and to the sides of the cart body, to the tail gate thereof, and to fixed parts of the dump cart, respectively, whereby actuation of the control lever causes the cart body to tilt and the tail gate to swing on its pivot and away Jfrom the cart body.
2. A toy vehicle, comprising a at seat, a running gear, a pivoted cart body provided with `a pivoted tail gate, a control lever, and dumping mechanism extending between the cart body and control lever, said dumping mechanism comprising a bell crank lever, a connecting bar pivoted thereto, and toggle arms pivoted to the connectin bar and to the sides of the cart body, to t e tail gate thereof, and to fixed parts of the toy vehicle, whereby when the control lever is actuated the cart body is tilted and the tail gate is swung on its pivot and away from the cart body.
3. A toy vehicle of the character described, comprising a seat, a running gear, a pivoted cart body carried by the running gear and provided with a pivoted tail gate, a control lever, and dumping mechanism extending between the control lever, tail gate' and cart body, said dumping mechanism comprising a bell crank lever pivoted to the control lever, a connecting bar pivoted to the bell crank lever,` and toggle arms pivoted to the connecting bar, to opposite sides of the cart body, to opposite ends of the tail gate thereof, and to fixed parts of the toy vehicle.
In testimony whereof we aiix our signatures.
