To all whom it may concern..-

Be it known that I, F RANK GILMAN, citizen of the United States, residing at Gervais, in the county of Marion and State of Oregon, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Writing-Paper Supports, of'which the following is a speclfii cation.

This invention relates to improvements in writing supports and more particularly to the hinge cover of a desk.

An important object of this invention is to provide a writing support having a glass top, on the under side of which are rovided black lines capable of being readily seenthrough the glass anda sheet of writing paper so as to act as a uide to the writer.

A further object of tiie invention is to provide a writing support having a glass writing surface which is held in position by means of a retaining flange, which flange also serves to properly position the paper and forms a margin for the paper.

A further object of the invention is to provide a writing support having simple means.

whereby the glass writing surface may be illuminated so that the lines on the same will appear through the paper to enable the writer to hand.

Other objects and advantages of the invention will be apparent during the course of the following description.

In the drawing, wherein for the purpose of illustration is shown a preferred embodiment of the invention, the numeral 10 generally designates a writing support which may be the to of a flat topped desk or which may be t e cover of a ladys writing desk. Also, if desired, the support 10 may be the top of a fiat table.

As illustrated in Fig. 2, the writing support 10 is provided with a rectangular recess 14: which opens out through the upper side proceed rapidly with the work in and which has its side walls formed with a groove 16 which receives the edge portions of a. glass writing member 18. The glass 18 is formed with a plurality of spaced parallel lines which are adapted to displace the line marker which is usually placed beneath a blank sheet of writing paper so as to indicate to the writer the correct space between the lines and alsoto enable the writer to write along a straight line.

As illustrated in Fig. 2, a bulb 20 is arranged in the recess 14 and is adapted for illuminating the sheetof glass 18 so that the lines may be readily perceived through the Writing paper. However, the writing support 10 is provided with an overhanging portion 24 which prevents the light from the bulb from shining directly into the writers eyes. The attaching portion of the bulb 20 will, of course, be inserted in a socket 26 which has connection with an electric wire 28. One end portion of the writing support may be formed with a socket 30 having connection with the wire 28 and adapted to receive the plug of another electric wire so as to complete the circuit through the bulb.

A reflector 32 extends longltudinally within the chamber or recess 14 and has one end portion formed with an attaching flange 34 which is secured to the upper portion of one of the side walls of the chamber whereby the reflector is supported in an inclined p0- sition. The edge portions of the reflector are extended upwardly so as to form side walls 36 which direct the light rays through the glass 18. The reflector may be of any desired material.

The glass 18 is held in position by means of an L-shaped retainer 38 having arms 39 and 40 which extend over the edge portions of the glass for securing the same in place. Openings 42 are formed in the retainin member and receive fastening devices 44 for connecting the retainin member to the writing support 10. As ilustrated in- Figs. 2 and 3, the arms 39 and 40 are provided with flanges 45 along one edge portion and which extend over the glass so as to provide a margin along one side of the paper. Further, the flanges 45 are formed in their under sides with grooves 46 which receive the paper so that the paper may be held in osition. It is, therefore, apparent that t e retaining element, in addition to securing the glass in position, forms amargin for the paper and also assists in holding the paper in position.

With reference to the foregoin description, taken in connection with t e accompanying drawing, it will be apparent that a writinv support constructed in accordance with this invention will allow one to write straight lines without the necessity of employing the customary paper marker. It will also be apparent t iat ones e es are not strained by reason of the use of t 1e bulb 20. The invention operates to the greatest advantage in a room not too light, though 1t is obvious that the light wills ine through the paper from the bulb in a light room as well as a dark room.

Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is:

A device for the purpose set forth comprising a table top having a recess therein, one end wall of said recess having a socket therein and the top of the table top overhanging the said wall, an illuminator fitted in said socket and disposed below the overhanging portion, a transparent plate fitted in the table top and extending over the re cess and provided with transverse marker lines, an inclined reflector disposed within the recess and extending upwardly from a point immediately below the illuminatorg to the opposite end of the recess at the to of the same, said reflector bein provided with side walls. bearing against t e sides of the recess and havin an attaching ,flange at its higher end where y it may be secured in place, a retainer comprising two arms disposed at a right angle and secured upon the table top and projecting over a side. edge of the transparent plate to hold the same 1n place, each of said arms having an overhangmg flange on its inner edge whereb to hold a paper sheet to the transparent p ate.
