Description

i which the entire battery UNITED STATES IRVING J. FOLTZ, or smarts, WASHINGTON.
Recon-Arron.
Thiszinvention relates to a regulator, and
more particularly that class of regulator intended for fuse in connection with a gas burner.
An object of my invention is the construction of aregulator of the type specified by means of which the burner may be caused to produce a pilot size flame or one in of burners may exert their maxlmum output together with all intervening amounts of flow between these two extremes.
i furtherobject of my invention is the provision of a regulator including a valve,
and seat therefor which valve will be self centering when in said seat. A still further object of my invention is the construction of a regulator from which the gas will be thrown straight into the mlxing tube of'the burner to producean ideal mixture, and consequently agood flame.
Another object of my invention is the provision of a regulator in which the parts are so constructed and cooperate in such a manner that a minimum wear is produced so that the regulator will always remain 1n perfect condition.
Further objects of my invention will appear in the annexed specification and drawings, which latter illustrates one practical embodiment of my invention and in wh1ch Figure 1 is a sectional side view of a gas burner having applied thereto my improved type of regulator.
Fig. 2 is a sectional end view of the same taken along lines 22 of Fig. 1.
In all of these views like reference numerals designate similar parts, and the reference numeral 5 indicates the mixing chamber of a burner, and 6 the tube leading from the generator, connection between-these two being provided by means of a further tube 7 interposed between and connected to the first named elements.
The regulator is positioned within the tube 7 and conveniently includes a cap 8 formed with a tapered opening, the cap being held in applied position by means of Specification of'ie'tiirs Patent.

screw threads such as 10 cooperating with the screw threads formed in the inner face of the tube 7 and adjacent the forward end thereof.
The regulator also comprises a spindle 11 provided adjacent its rear end with any suitable rotating means such as a handle 12 which spindle is formed adjacent its forward end with a reduced portion 13 to the rear of which screw threads 14 are provided which screw threads cooperate with screw threads in the bore face of the tube 7, any suitable packing means such as 15 inclosing the spindle 11 and rear end of the tube to prevent a leakage of gas at this point.
The reduced portion 13 of the spindle 11 terminates in a portion 16 triangular in cross section, as hasbe'en clearly shown in Fig. :2, thecorners of said triangular portion" bearing against the inner face of the Associated with the forward end of cap 8. the portion 16 of the spindle'll is a tapered face of which extends shank 1'7, the inclined opening 9 so that an through the tapered orifice of proper diameter is provided around the tapered point in the right proportion to the gas it can pass.
A yoke 18 conveniently has one of its ends encircling the tube 7, its opposite end extending beyond the packing means 15, as has been clearly shown in Fig. l and encircling the spindle at this point. A suitable stop is secured to the spindle l1 adjacent this point, which stop conveniently includes a collar 19 and set screw 20 for holding the said collar in position.
It will now-be appreciated that in operation the triangular portion 16 of the spindle ll will bear against the inner face of the cap 8, and by virtue of the small amount of always be retained in central position with respect to the tapered opening 9.
Upon a rotation of the spindle, it will be understood that the same will be projected or retracted by means of the screw threads lat or other expedient used to move the spindle longitudinally of the tube 7 This movement will result in a more restricted or enlarged space existing between the outer face of the shank 17 and the face of the opening 9 of the cap 8, and by means of this construction the amount of gas passing between these members may be varied at will, at the same time forming a proper sized orifice. It will p when the regulator I easy starting.
will occur by virtue of the fact that the stop associated with the spindle 11 will prevent an inward motion on the part of the spindle I structure might beyond the pre-determined point.
By means of this construction, the tapered shank is prevented from seating as aforesaid in the orifice. The stop is so set that the pilot or generator heater will only burn is in as nearly closed position as possible. at a point at which a constricted opening exists between the orifice opening 9 and the shank 17 so thatthe first gas generated may not escape too easily, thus preventing an Further if the stop were eliminated the shank would seat within the opening which would quickly'become too large because of wear for practical purposes, and would result in the shank and cap both having to berenewed.
This would practically be the case if the shank were left in seated position within the opening while the parts were hot.
Obviously upon the metal cooling the contraction would cause a great mutilation of the bore of the opening, and in some instances would cause a sticking of these parts.
The burner is shut oil by means of a valve (not shown) in the supply line, and it will further be appreciated, as an advantage derived from the stop that if these parts co- .act to close the opening that the generator would fill with kerosene making it extremely difficult to generate the gas the next time the burner was set in operation.
, The shank further. acts-as a cleaner for the opening, and the regulator may be cleared of small particles of various material by retracting the spindle 11 to itsextreme position while the burner is in operation so that the particles will be blown out through the larger orifice thus formed, as the pressureiin the regulator is about the same as in'the supply tank, from 2035 pounds. r
- Also the cap 8 may be tightened by retracting the spindle and the stop may subsequentlyfbe re-set to conform, to the new setting of the parts.
Finall 1 by means of the triangular portion 16 of the spindle a positive centering of The stop may be set the shank within the opening or orifice 9 is provided and no adjustment of these parts will be necessary during the subsequent operation of the burner.
Obviously numerous modifications of be resorted to without in the least departing from the scope of my claims,
What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is as follows 1. A regulator, including a tube, a constricted opening at the rear-end of said tube, a. spindle projecting within said tube, the inner .end of said spindle being adapted to co-act with said opening, a stop including a collar, a set screw associated with said 001-- said collar being adapted to encircle said spindle and beingsecured thereto by means of said set screw, and .a yoke having one of its ends encircling said tubing and its lar,
opposite end encircling said spindle whereby to cooperate with said stop to limit the inward motion of said spindle.
2. A regulator, including a piece of tubing, a cap secured to one end of said tubing,
saidcap being formed with an opening, a
spindle projecting through said tubing and 'cap the outer endof said spindle extending through said opening, andmeans forming part of said spindle for holding the same centrally with respect to said tubing and cap.
.3. A regulator, including ,a piece of tubing, a cap-secured to one end of said tubing, said cap being formed with an opening, a spindle projecting through said tubing and cap, the outer end of said spindle extending through said opening, and means forming a part of said spindle and cooperating with the inner face of said cap for holding said spindle centrally with respect to said tubing.
at. A regulator including a piece of tubing, .a cap secured to one end of said tubing, said cap being formed with. an opening, a spindle projecting through said tubing and cap, the outer end of saidspindle extending through said opening, said spindle being- .triangu'lar in cross section'adjacent its inner end portion, such triangular portion contacting with the inner face of said cap whereby to hold the said spindle centrally with respect to the cap-opening and tube.
