Description
I G. W. PETRAK.
GREASE CUP WRENCH.
APPLICATION FILED FEB. 12, 1921.
. 1 4' 5 Patented Dec. 13, 1921.
520 [fie/raid ring 10 is UNITED STATES PATENT OFFIQE GREASE-CUP WRENCH.
1 AOOAJSG.
Application filed February 12, 1921.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, Gnonon Vi. PETRAK, a citizen of the United States, residing at Marcellus, in the county of Adams and State of lVashington, have invented new-and useful Improvements in Grease-Cup l i renches, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in wrenches, and has particular reference to a wrench adapted to be used for applying and removing the caps of grease cups.
One object of this invention is to provide a wrench of the character described, which includes adjustable means whereby the wrench may be readily used on various sizes of grease cups.
Another object of this invention is to provide awrench of the character described, which is simple in construction, positive in action, inexpensive to manufacture and compact in the arrangement'of its parts.
Other objects and advantages of this invention will be apparent during the course of the following description.
In the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification and in which like numerals are employed to designate like parts throughout the same,
Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved wrench,
Fig. 2 is a sectional view taken on the line 2-2 of Fig. 3,
F ig; 3 is a. side elevation of my improvedi wrench shown applied to a grease cup, and
Fig. 4 is a sectional view taken on the line 44: of Fig. 2.
In the drawings wherein for the purpose of illustration is shown a. preferred. embodiment of my invention, I have shown a shank terminating adjacent one end in a handle 5 and at the opposite end in an enlarged portion 6 provided with an internally slotted portion 7 which forms an upper wall 8 and a lower wall 9 in the body portion of the wrench. The lower wall 9 has teeth 10 formed thereon, the purpose of which will be hereinafter described.
The numeral 10 designates band or ring terminating in extremities 11 and 12. This preferably made of leather or other suitable flexible material, and as shown to advantage in Figs. 2 and 3, is adapted to be fitted around the outer periphery of a cap 13 of a grease cup 14:, and is actuated by manual movement of the handle 5 whereby Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 13, 1921.
Serial No. 444,476.
the cap 13 is either removed from, or applied to the grease cup 1 Riveted 011 the outside of the band adjacent the extremities thereof, are metal reinforcing strips 15 and 16 adapted to be bentat 17 and 18, respectively, and then fitted on the underside of the band and riveted thereto. Cut away portions 19 and 20 are pro vided in each of the strips and register with slotted portions 21 and 22 formed in the band 10.
For the purpose of pivotally connecting one extremity of the band and its associated reinforcing strip to the enlarged portion, I have inserted a fastening element 23. This element is adapted to be disposed and retained between the extremities 11 of the band and the metal reinforcing strip 15 at the point of bending, while a second fastening element 24, similarly mounted 011 the opposlte extremity 16 of the band, is adapted to penetrate the slotted portion and be positioned on the serrated surface of the body portion, whereby the band may be suitably adjusted to fit various sizes of grease cups.
In the operation of applying the wrench to a grease cup, the cap is retained in the flexible band and then inserted over the grease cup. Rotary movement imparted to the handle 5 will in turn cause the cap to be threaded on the cup; it will be apparent that the flexibility of the band not only serves to prevent a slipping of the cap prior to insertion over the cup, but also serves as a means for positively gripping the cap when the handle 5 is actuated and thereby assures a quick and positive application of the capover the cup. On the other hand, when it is desired to remove the cap from the cup, the position of the wrench is reversed and rotary movement imparted to the handle will serve to remove the cap.
"While the wrench herein described and illustrated in the drawings, isprimarily intended for use on grease cups, it is to be understood that this type of wrench has various other uses, and it is to be further understood that various changes in the shape, size and arrangement of parts may be resorted to without departing from the spirit of the invention, or the scope of the snbjoined claim.
Having thus described my invention, I claim: p
In a device of the character described, a
shank including a handle and a main body portion and adjust-able therein, and reinforcportion longitudinally slotted and provided ing strips having cut-away portions therein with an inner serrated surface, a flexible adapted to register with the slots: of said 10 hand slotted adjacent "its extremities and band to allow freedom of movement of said 5 having one of V the extremities pivotally shank therein.
mounted on said shank, the other extremity In testimony whereof I affix my signature.
of said band being carried within the slotted GEORGE W. PETRAK.
