T 0 (1M whom it may concern Be it known that I, CHARLES M. CoornR, a citizen of the United States, residing at Oklahoma, in the county of Oklahoma and State of Oklahoma, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Car Doors, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention relates to doors for freight-cars and consists in the combinations and arrangements of elements hereinafter described and particularly set forth in the accompanying drawings.
The invention has for its purpose to provide a door of this type which will be of simple construction, readily installed, easy to operate and which will give the desired security against opening by unauthorized persons.
The further purpose of the invention 15 to provide a structure of door which will withstand the heavy usage to which such doors are subjected and which will in every way give the necessary effective closure required and to accomplish these results within the cost of present doors used for this purpose.
The invention is disclosed by way of illustration by the accompanying drawings:
Figure 1 is a front elevational view showing the door in closed position.
Figure 2 is a similar view showing the door in open position.
Figure 3 a transverse sectional view on line 33 of Figure 1.
Figure 4 is a horizontal sectional view taken on the line 44 of Figure 1.
Referring to the construction in further detail and wherein like reference characters designate corresponding parts, 5 indicates the car frame and 6 and 7 the upper and lower portions of the door structure. The upper door portion 6 is slidingly mounted by the usual hangers 8 on the strip 9 and the meeting edges of the door sections have complemental and beveled edges 10 whereby the locking of the upper section will provide an effective seal between the door sections and additionally secure the lower door portion 7 as shown (see Figure 3).
The door locking means consists of a pair of members 11 slidable through apertured brackets-12 and pivotally connected to the member 14, that is in turn pivotally mounted at 15 to the door as shown. A latch member 16 serves for manipulating part 1 1 to move the rods into and out of locking position and the usual seal S and fastening device 17 are provided as shown.

' The locking ends 19 of the members 11 enter suitable apertures in the pair of strips 18; and the pair of strips 20 secured to the sides of the car at the lower portion of the doorway provide the necessary grooves or channel-ways for the vertical movement of the strips 23 secured to said lower door portion. Said strips 23 are of greater width at their upper ends as at 22 to provide shoul-' ders or abutments for engaging with the free ends of the two spring arms 21 whereby to hold said lower door portion in its raised or closed position. Said spring arms 21 are adapted to be moved clear of the strip 23 to allow the lower portion of the door to drop, and when in its lowermost position said door is supported by the stops or bolts 24: as indicated in Figure 2. The lower door portion 7 is adapted to be locked on the in side by hooks 25 that engage with the eyebolts 26 as shown.
In operation the door is opened by turning the member 16 to withdraw the bolts 11 when the door section 6 may be moved to the position shown in Figure 2. The spring arms 21 are then moved outwardly to release the lower door portion which in its open position has its upper edge 10 lying flush with the upper surface of the car floor.
It is to be understood that I do not de- I sire to limit myself to the precise details of construction and arrangement herein set forth, as it is obvious that various modifications may be made therein without departing from the essential features of the invention.
Having thus described my invention what is claimed as new is:
In a vertically sliding door, the combination of strips extending in the plane of the door'from the respective lateral edges, each strip being of increased width at'its upper portion to provide a shoulder, channel-ways in which the respective strips are slidably disposed, the outer wall of each channel-way being apertured near its upper end, a spring arm secured adjacent each of said apertures and bent at its free end to provide a stop adapted to pass through the respective aper ture and engage beneath the respective shoulder to hold the door in its raised or closed position, and a bolt passing through each channel near its lower end to engage said respective shoulder and support said gate when in lowered or open position.
