HUGH WHITE, OF LA FAYETTE,v INDIANA.
IMPROVEMENT IN BOOT-LININGS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 142,307, dated August 26, 1873 aapplication filed March 8, 1873.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, HUGH WHITE, of La Fayette, in the county of Tippecanoe and State of Indiana, have invented a new and valuable Improvement in Boot-Lining; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings making a part of this specification, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.
Figure 1 of the drawings is arepresentation of the lining attached to leg of boot. Fig. 2 is a view of the lining detached.
My invention relates to an improved mode of attaching the linings in the manufacture of ton gue-boots; and it consists in stitching the lining directly to the morocco boot-leg, above the counter, and only to the boot-leg, instead of stitching it to the vamp, as in the old method.
In the drawing, A represents the front half of a morocco boot-leg, with the vamp or front portion of the upper attached in the usual manner, except that a portion of the morocco leg extends downv inside belowl the point of attachment of the vamp, so as to form a flap, a. The vamp B is made in the usual form, with a tongue, b, extending upward, and is attached to the leg A by stitching it to the outersurface. The lining (l is made wider than in the old method, and when in place in the boot it extends farther up on the foot than the old. lining, so that it is not necessary to stitch it to the vamp, as it extends up too high to allow of any obstruction to the foot in pulling on the boot. The rear upper edge c1 of the lining is stitched to the flap a, and the front portion c2 lies closely along the inner surface of the vamp, without being stitched thereto, being trimmed down to a thin edge, and the front and lower edge c3 is sewed to the sole along with the vamp, the rear edge c4 being sewed to the rear half of the leg in forming the side seam.C
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
In the manufacture of boots in which the leg and vamp form two separate pieces united by stitching, the wide lining C, extending high up on the instep, as described, and attached to the boot-legA by stitching its edge c1 to the flap a, and dispensing with thel stitching to the vamp, substantially as shown and described.
In testimony that I claim the above I have hereunto subscribed my name in the presence of two witnesses.
HUGH WHITE.
