UNHTD STATES HARRY J. SMALLWOOD, OF SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA.
BOTTLE STOPPEEL.
Application filed. June 26, 1922.
To (all whom it may concern: v
Be it known that I, HARRY J. SMALLwooo, citizen of the United States, and resident of San Francisco, county of San Francisco, State of California, have invented a new and useful Bottle i tooper, of which the tollowing is a specification.
The present invention relates to improvements in stoppers for milk bottles and the like and its particular object is to provide a stopper of the character described that will make a good, air-tight closure for the bottle and at the same time provide a spout through which the milk or other liquid contents of the bottle may be discharged. A further object of the invention is to provide a cap in combination with this stopper which can be easily removed without the use of any tools or Sharp instruments such as are ordinarily required for the stoppers now commonly used.
With these objects in view I have shown the preferred form of my invention in the accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1 shows a vertical section through the neck oi a bottle with my stopper in position, Figure 2 a top plan view of the same, Figure 3 a blank out of which the cap may be made, Figure 4 a vertical section througl'i the cap and Figure 5 a vertical section through the stopper without the cap. While I have shown only the preferred term of the inven tion I wish to have it understood that various changes or modifications may be made within the scope of the claim hereto at tached without departing from the spirit of the invention.
The bottle 1, of which only the neck 2 is shown in the drawing, is of the common milk bottle type and provided with an annular seat 3 for the stopper 4;. The latter comby the same.
ciial No. 570,787.
prises a disc 6 ot any suitable material adapted to rest on the seat 3 so that its periphery comes in close contact with the back 7 ol the seat. The disc is provided with a preferably central hole 8 and an upwardly extending tube 9 communicating with this hole and'torming a. spout for the same. The tube is preferably tapered slightly as shown in the drawing and is adapted to receive the cap 11 which [its tightly over the same and is provided with a flap 12 by means of which it may be manipulated. The cap may be made of any suitable ma-s terial and may be constructed in any suitable manner as for instance, out of the blank shown in Figure 3 comprising a piece of cardboard 18 having a central lip 141 and a projection 15 on each side of the lip. To make the cap the cardboard is bent into tubular shape, the lip turned inwardly and the two side projections are then bent inwardly along the dotted lines so as to lie on the lip. The parts are glued together and it it is desired to withdraw the cap the overlying flap 12 may be separated from the cap by inserting the thumb and the cap raised it should be understood, however, that the cap may be removed by taking hold of its circumferential part with the thumb and several fingers.
I claim:
A stopper tor a bottle having a cylindrical neck and an annular seat in said neck, comprising a disc fitting on said seat, a hole in the disc, a tube, rising from the same coinmunicatin; with the hole and a. cap slidably engaging the tube having a flap associated with its top for facilitating its manipulation.
