UNITED STATES PATENT QFFIGE.
ADAM ooLL1s, or ALTOONA, PENNSYLVANIA.
IMPROVEMENT IN PlPE-WRENCHES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 149,641, dated April 14, 1874; application filed February 21, 1874.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ADAM GoLLIs, of A1- toona, in the county of Blair and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Wrenches, of which the following is a specification:
This invention will first be fully described, and then pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawing,-Figure 1 is a side View of thewrench. Fig. 2 is an edge Fig. 3 is a longitudinal section of Fig. 2, taken on the line 00 :20.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
A is the head, which has a central hole, B, which allows it to he slipped over the stud which is to be turned. 0 is a projecting steel die in one side of the hole B. (See Fig. 1.) This die passes entirely through the head, and its edges are designed to penetrate the stud and prevent the wrench from turning on it. D is the working-lever. This lever works loosely in the head. Its end is ragged or serrated, and projects into the hole B, and engages with the bolt when the lever is drawn toward the small screw E, as seen in dotted lines in Fig. 3. The end of the screw E enters a slot, F, in the lever, (see Fig. 3,) which allows it to play back and forth. G is a lip, which works through the side slot H. In griping the bolt the lip G bears upon the side of the slot, by which a short and most powerful purchase is obtained to gripe the bolt, rod, or
article to be turned. This is plainly seen in Fig. 3.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. A wrench constructed substantially as shown and described-that is, having a head with a fulcrum lip and slot, substantially as seen at G H, and a working lever, for the purposes described.
2. The head A, having screw E, in combination with the lever D, provided with slot F, for the purpose set forth.
ADAM OOLLIS.
