Application filed March 4, 1924. Serial in); 696,914.
T0 at whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMEs E, Po'r'rnma citizen of the United States, residing at Providence, in the county of Providenceand State of Rhode Island, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bracelet Hooks, of which the following is a" speci i to this body portion through the sliank porfication. I
This invention relatesto a hook or con:
nec'tor which is adapted more particularl for attachingthe ends of a bracelet to a wrlst watch and the like, andthe object of this invention is to provide a simple and practical construction of such a hook or connector having a slidable tongue for closing the hook.
WVith' these and other objects in View, the invention consists of certain novel features of construction, as will be more fully described, and particularly pointed out-in the appended claims. i i In the accompanying drawings:
Figure 1 is a side elevation of a watch showing the ends of a bracelet as connected thereto by my improved hook or connector.
Figure 2 is a perspective view showing the body portion and the hook portion of the connector as attached to the body portion by a shank portion.
Figure 3 is a perspective view of the under side of the back plate and end walls of the body member detached and in inverted position.
Figure 4 is a perspective view showing the endways hook-closing tongue detached.
Figure 5 is a section on line 55 of Figure 6 showing the end of the body portion with the back plate secured thereto by rolling the edges of the side walls over those of the back plate.
Figure 6 is a view of the under sideof the connector member. I
Figure 7 is a central sectional side elevation of my improved hook or connector.
It is found in the practical construction and operation of hook members of this character which are designed to attach the ends of link bracelets to a watch or other article, of advantage to provide an. endways slidable tongue member in the body of the hook whereby the tongue may be withdrawn to permit the hook to be attached and detached to and from the watch and when this tongue is released it is permitted to automatically move to close the hook to lock it in engaged position and the'following isdetailed aescriptionof one construction of hook by which this resultmay be accomplished WVith referenceto the drawing, 10 designates: the body" of ahook or coi'inectorwhich is provided with rearwardl turnedside walls 11 and a hook member 12 is connected tion 1-3;" a
The front plate 14; of thishook member is provided with; an opening 15 for the purpose presently described and the rear end of this front-plate is provided; with a tongue 16 which may be rolled or folded into eye form asbest illustrated inFigure 7 by whichthe body of this hook member may be connected to the next adjacent element of the chain or bracelet. f
In order toprovide a tongue member for closing the hook, I have provided a strip of resilient sheet stock-which is folded upon itself forming along arm, 17 which is adapt edto extend forwardly to close the month of the hook '12 also a short arm 18 which is bent or folded upwardly as at 19 to form an operating projection adapted to extend through the opening 15 in the front plate of the hook and in which opening it is adapted to slide for, the purpose of locking and unlocking the entering mouth of the hook.
At the foldQO where these arms 17 and 18are connected together the stock has been slightly reduced laterally to form an extending portion 21 and lateral shoulders 22 on either side thereof against which one end 23 of the operating coiled spring 24 may rest, the opposite end of the coiled spring engaging the'rear wall'25 of the back plate 26,-which plate also has an opposite end wall 27 slotted at'28 to permit the passage of the hook-closing arm 17 therethrough.
This slot serves as one guide for this arm 17 while the opening 15 through which the extension 19' projects serves as a second guide for the endways slidable action of this tongue member.
The spring 24 acting on the tongue serves to normallypress the same to closed position and, when withdrawn by engagement, With the operating member 19 and again released it will at once jump back to its A forward position to close and lock the hook.
endways but I desire it to be understood that I re I serve the privilege of resorting to all the mechanical changes to Which the device is susceptible, the invention being defined and limited only by the terms of claims.
I claim:
1. A bracelet connector member comprisinga body'portion having side Walls and a hook portion at one end of said body portion, a spring tongue in the body having a forwardly-extending arm for closing the hook, and a backplate having end Walls through one of Which said tongue extends,
said plate being secured between the side Walls of said body. 4
2. A bracelet connector member comprising a body having side Walls and having a hook portion at one end thereof, an slidable flexible. hook-closing tongue in said body, and a back plate having end Walls and secured between the side Walls of said body, said tongue extending the appended an endways slidable tongue in said body for normally closing said hook, a spring in said body for urging said tongue to closed position, and a. back plate for said body secured to said side Walls for housing said tongue between. said body and back plate.
at. A connector comprising a body having side Walls, a'hook secured to said body, at one end thereof, an endWays slidable tongue in said body for normally closing said hook, a spring in said body for urging said tongue to closed position, and a backplate for said body having end Walls and secured to the body by folded-over edges of said side Walls.
5. A bracelet connector member comprisinga body having an opening in its front plate, a hook at one vend of the body, a closure tongue slidably mounted in said body and foldedupon itself forming tWo arms one extendingforward to close the hook and the other having an operating projection extending throughthe opening in the front plate, a spring pressing said tongue to closed position, and a backplate for operatively securing said spring and tongue in said body.
In testimony Whereof I affix my signature.
JAMES E. POTTER.
