IMPROVEMENT IN HOT-BLAST OVENS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 152,353, dated June 23, 1874 applica-tion filed May 15,1874.
To all whom 'it may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY ESSEX, of Meadville, in the county of Crawford and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Apparatus for Producing Hot Blasts; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form part of this specification.
The object of my invention is to furnish an apparat-us for producing and supplying a llotair blast for cupolas, blast-furnaces, or other places where a hot blast is necessary for smelting or other purposes; and the nature of my invention consists in one or more air heating and forcing vessels, each provided with suitable openings for the entrance of cold air, for the exit of waste hot air, and for the exit of hot air under pressure toward the place where theJ blast is required. It also consists in the construction and combination of parts, as will be hereinafter `more fully set forth.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawing, in which- Figure l is a plan view, and Fig. 2 a central vertical section on line n: x.
A represents a brick furnace oi' any suitable construction, and elevated so as to have an'open space underneath the bottom thereof. Through the furnace A passes one or more vessels, B, of cylindrical or other suitable form. These vessels may be made of any material suitable for the purpose, and of any size desired, and placed in any position, but preferably vertically, as shown. The vessel B (shown in the drawing) extends above and below the `furnace, and has a cold-air inlet, C, at the bottom, and an outlet, D, at the top for waste hot air. G represents a pipe leadin g from the vessel B to the place where the hot blast is desired, said pipe being provided with a check-valve, c.
The openings C and D are provided with tight-fitting valves E E of any 'suitable construction, and connected by a rod,

I do not confine myselfl to 011e inlet and one outlet for each vessel B, as it may be provided with any desired number, each opening, how ever, being provided with a valve.
Then thevalves E E are opened the waste hot air in the vessel B rushes out at the top, and the cold air passes in at the bottom to replace it. The valves are then closed, when the air in the vessel will expand by the heat, and a part thereof force its way through the pipe G to the cupola, furnace, or other place where the blast is required. The valves are then opened again, and the operation repeated over and over.
rlhe movement of the valves may be done by hand or automatically by any suitable means, as desired.
Any number of the heating-vessels may be used together to produce the desired blast.
It the air is not hot enough after it comes from the heating-vessels it may be passed on its way to the blast-furnace through a heating furnace or furnaces.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I cla-im as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
l. One or more air heating and forcing vessels, B, arranged within a furnaceand each provided with openings for the entrance of cold air, for the exit of waste hot air, and for the exit of hot air under pressure, substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.
2. The combination, with the air-heating` vessel B, having openings C and l), of the valves E E and the pipe G, with `check-valve a, all constructed substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.
