PENNSYLVANIA.
IMPROVEMENT IN LININGS FOR THE GROOVES 0F PIPE-WELDING FURNACES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 154,061, dated August 11, 1874; application filed March 24, 1874.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, GEORGE MATHESON, of McKeesport, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, and JOHN NOR- TON, of Pittsburg, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Lining for the Grooves for Pipe-Weldin g Furnaces; and we do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description thereof.
Our invention relates to an improvementin lining for the grooves of pipe-welding furnaces; and consists of a compound known as Woodbridge clay, such as used for making white ware and Mount Savage fire-brick broken into small particles, said clay and broken particles of fire-brick being mixed in the proportions and manipulated substantially in the manner as hereinafter described.
We take of Woodbridge clay one part, and of broken fragments of Mount Savage firebrick four parts, and mix thoroughly together, and then bake the same in a suitable oven, thus forming acompound similar to that used in makingpots, such as are used in the menu facture of white ware. To one part of this baked material broken into small particles we mix four parts of broken fragments of Mount Savage clay, and four parts of Woodbridge clay, found at or near Woodbridge,
New Jersey, using sufficient water to thorpots used in the manufacture of white ware, which pots are made of the compound hereinbefore described, that such pots or refuse broken up into small particles answer the same purpose for lining-the groove of the furnace as the hereinbefore-described compound; therefore, we wish it clearly understood that we do not con fine Ourimprovement or discovery to the single use of the compound, but also the use or application of the refuse or pots hereinbefore described to be used as a lining for the groove of furnaces used for welding pipe.
By the use of the lining hereinbefore described, the bottom of the furnace and its groove will always hold the same relation to each other, and the embankment along the edge of the groove common to the furnaces lined in the ordinary way will be avoided, thereby saving labor and facilitating theoperation of welding pipe.
We are aware that a composition consistin g of common brick clay and pulverized saggers of equal proportions, with one twentyfifth the quantity of common salt mixed with water, is used as a lining for defective stoves and furnaces.

What we do claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
For the groove of a pipe-welding furnace, a lining consisting of broken particles of pots used in the manufacture of white ware, or of a compound composed of Woodbridge clay and Mount Savage fire-brick, substantially in the proportions as herein set forth, and for the purpose described.
