UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
SYLVESTER M. WESSELS, OF SALT LAKE CITY, UTAH TERRITORY.
IMPROVEMENT IN FURNACES FOR ROASTING ORES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 154,970. dated September 15,1874; application filed November 25, 1873.
.To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, S. M. WEssELs, of Salt Lake city and county, Territory of Utah, have invented an Improved Form of Furnace for the Reduction of Copper, Iron, Silver, Lead, and other Ores or Minerals; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
To enable others skilled in the art to make use of my invention, I will proceed to describe its construction and operation.
My invention consists in certain'combinations and arrangements of devices and appliances, as hereinafter set forth and claimed.
In the drawings, Figure l is an isometrical view, Fig. 2 a vertical longitudinal section, and Fig. 3 a plan view, of my invention complete. Fig. 4 is a view of the perforated water-pipe; Fig. 5, a sectional side view of the furnace.
To the furnace A I attach a desulphurizingflue, B B, constructed upon suitable angles of inclination and of such materials as may be adapted. I construct a condensing-flue, O G, at the end of the desulphurizing-flue B B. A portion of the flue O O is constructed vertical and a portion upon an inclined plane. Over the condensing-flue I place a water-tank, from which I conduct a jet or spray of water into the condensing-flue by the pipe D from the water-tank. I also introduce a second waterjet in combination with a steam-jet .through the pipes E and F into the condensing-flue.
This causes the condensation of the escaping particles of metals, which are carried into the wet dust-chambers I I through the openings W, and are removed at pleasure through the doors J J. The lower vertical section 0 of the condensing-flue (J G I use as an auxiliary chamber for the collection of the escaping particles of metals, which can be removed through the door L at pleasure. Through the hopper K I introduce the ores into the desulphuriz= ing-flue B B, which are worked toward the furnace A by hooks or rabbles through the doors V, and are introduced into the blastfurnace. in a dry or semi-liquid condition. Through the door T I introduce the fuel and fluxes necessary, where they are mixed with the ores from the desulphurizing-flue B. Over or near the furnace A I erect a tank containing petroleum.' From this tank is conducted a stream of petroleum through the pipe G, where it enters into combination with a jet of superheated steam through the pipe H. This combination enters the furnace A through the pipe X. This causes a higher and more rapid combustion of the gases evolved from the furnace A. The pressure with which the combined petroleum and superheated steam are admitted carries them over the ores contained in the desulphurizing-flue, which removes and eXpels sulphur, arsenic, antimony, and other rebellious elements fromthe ores before they are admittedinto the blast-furnace.
The object of this invention is to combine such forms and appurtenances above described with the vertical blast-furnace in order to obtain a greater economy in the production of metals through furnace operations.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- I. In combination with the condenser G, the water-jet D and combined water and steam jet E F, as and for the purposes set forth.
2. In combination with the inclined flue B of an ore-roasting furnace, A, the condenser, consisting of the vertical and inclined portions 0 0, wet dust-chambers I J, openings W, auxiliary chamber 0 L, water-j et D, and combined water and steam jet E F, all constructed, arranged, and adapted to operate substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
SYLVESTER M. WESSELS.
