' CRIB.
Application filed October-18, 1924. Serial No. 744,406.
The primary object of the invention is` to provide a device of this character with a novel form of lock for the drop side there of, the construction being' such that when the side is in its locked position thesame will be held firmly against accidental opening, the construction, however, permitting the side to be unlocked or dropped easily and quickly.
A further object of the invention is to provide a lock for this purpose so constructed that the mother can upon simply pressing upon a conveniently located handle release the mechanism to unlock the side for dropping, the upward or closing movement of the side causing the lock to automatically operate to lock the side.
lVtli these and other objects in view, this invention resides in the novel features of construction, formation, combination and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter more fully described, claimed and illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1 is a side elevation of the device.
Figure 2 is a sectional `view on line 2-2 of Figure 1.
Figure 3 is a sectional view on line 3 3 of Figure 1.
Figure 4 is a detail view of the locking mechanism.
Figure 5 is a det-ail view of the one of `the plates.
Referring to the drawing, 1 designates the end frames, which support the spring frame 2, said spring frame being formed from angle iron. The corner posts 3 of the end frames are provided with longitudinal grooves 4 in which slide the studs 5 carried by the ends of the upper and lower rails 6 and 6 of the side frame 7. The construction thus far described is conventional, and while I deem it desirable to have only one drop side, the construction is such that both sides may drop and be equipped with the locking mechanism.
Suitably fixed to the vertical web 8 of the side bar of the spring frame 2 are plates 9, said plates being provided with integral right angle plates 10, the upper edges of which being provided with bearings 1l. Pivotally engaged in these bearings are the ends of the shaft 12, which terminate in depending arms 13, which in turn terminate in horizontal projections 14, the purpose of which will appear later. Since the plates 9 are arranged in pairs the shaft 12 will be supported in a horizontal position and longitudinally with respect to the side bar of the spring frame, said shaft having a depending arm 12 carried thereby.
Carried by the upper and lower rails 6 and 6 of the side frame are bearings 15 in which is rotatably engaged a rod 16,' the upper end of which is provided with a handle 17 for rotating the same. The lower end of the rod terminates in a horizontal arm 18 and extends in an oblique direction under the rail 6', said arm terminat-ing in a horizontal finger 19 which rests against the adjacent arm 12 of the shaft 12, there being a coil spring20 connecting the rail 6 and the finger 19 to normally hold the same in its inoperative position.
Suitably secured to the lower rail 6 of the side frame is a pair of plates 21, each having a right angle flange 22 formed integral therewith, said anges having downwardly and inwardly inclined edges 23 which co-operate with-the extensions 14 in a manner to be hereinafter described. The lower edges of the flanges are provided with seats 24 adapted to engage the extensions 14 when the side frame is in its elevated or closed position.
When vthe side frame is in its elevated position the seats 24 are engaged with the extensions 14. To lower the side frame it is only necessary to move the side frame upwardly a short distance to disengage the seats 24 from the extensions 14, whereupon the handle 17 is pressed inwardly to cause the finger 19 to swing the arm 12 with which itcontacts inwardly, thus moving the extensions 14 to a position to permit flanges 22 `to pass downwardly without interference.
It will be obvious that when the side is moved upwardly that the edges 23 of the flanges 22 will engage the extensions 14 to swing the same inwardly. As soon as the extensions slide from the edges 23 they will swing outwardly so that the seats 24 will engage therewith when the side frame is released.
What is Claimed is l. A crib comprising end frames, a spring frame supported thereby, a shaft pivotally supported upon the spring frame and having extensions upon its ends, a side frame slidahly Connected with the end frames and having flanges carried thereby, seats formed in the flanges for enga-ging the extensions to hold the side traine in its elevated position, a rod pivotally supported by the side frame, and means carried by the rod foi',` rocking the shaft to disengage the extensions from the seats.
2. A crib comprising' end frames, a sp1-ing frame associatedJ therewith, a shaft pivotally supported by the spring frame and having extensions upon its ends, a sid-e frame slidahlyeonneoted with the end frames, a pai of flanges aied by the side frame for slidably engaging the extensions to swing the saine inwardly when the side frame is'rnoved4 upwardly, seats formed in the fianges for engaging the extensions, a finger carried by the vside f raine for ac- `tuating an arm on said shaft to move the
