Be it' known that I, MARION L. TonRiNnn, a citizen of the United States, residing at the city and county of San Francisco and State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Saliva Tubes, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention relates to the class of saliva tubes used in dental operations.
The object of the invention is to provide a I simple and efficient device of the class described, and one that may be easily and quickly cleaned and sterilized. A further object is to provide means for preventing the soft tissues of the mouth from being drawn into the intake orifices of the deviceby the suction or other pressure, thereby clogging said orifices and preventing the free flow of saliva therethrough.
In the form illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and described, hereinafter, my device is constructed principally of some suitable metal, but it is obvious that other and cheaper materials, such as glass or clay,
may be substituted, so that thedevice may,
if desired, be thrown away after being used once, thus obviating entirely the necessity for cleaning. It is to be understood, moreover, that other changes within the scope of the claim hereto appended, may be made in the form and construction of the device without departing from the spirit of the invention.
In order fully to comprehend the invention, reference should be had to the accompanying drawings, wherein Fig. 1 is a side elevation of my saliva tube.

Fig. 4 is a detailed View of the end portion of a modified form of my device.
In the drawings, the reference numeral 1 designates the tubular stem of my saliva tube, which is bent over near its upper end, in the usual manner, to enable it to be inserted into and to hang from the mouth of the patient. Said stem is understood to be adapted for connection, at its lower end 3,
to any suitable and well known device for producing the necessary suction and for the disposal of the saliva.
At its upper end the stem 1 terminates in an intake nozzle 8, formed preferably of a tube of reduced diameter'secured to the end of said stem 1. teriorly threaded to receive a guard 42, which comprises an elongated can adapted to surround and enclose the nozzle 3, and having a plurality of perforations 5 formed in its walls. The saliva thus enters the guard cap through the perforations 5, passes between said guard and thenozzle 3, and enters the latter through its lower openend.
On account of the length of the guard cap 4 and the plurality of openings 5 therein,
there will always be a free passage for the flow of saliva, for, even though the lower openings 5 in said guard cap may be obstructed by the soft tissues of the mouth, the upper openings will still be free.
The guard cap 4, being screwed upon the end of the stem 1, is readily removable for cleaning and sterilizing. If desired, said guard cap 4 may be formed to carry a laterally extending wing or other member 6, as shown in Fig. 4:, which can be utilized as a tongue deflector or shield, to permit greater freedom of operation in some particular region of the mouth.
