Description

FFICE.
EDWIN O. GOODWIN, OF BRISTOL, CONNECTICUT.
BACKGAMMON AND CHECKER BOARD.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 16,116, dated November 25, 1856.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDWIN O. GOOD'WIN, of the town of Bristol, county of Hartford, and State of Connecticut, have invented a new and useful Improvement in the Construction of Draught and Backgammon Boards; and I do hereby declare that the following is a correct description thereof reference being had to the accompanying drawing and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
The nature of my invention consists in the arrangement made for preventing the pieces or men from sliding about upon playing in situations where there is an uneven or rocking motion, such as in cars or on ship board.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my improvement I will proceed to describe its construction and operation.
The pZtm.Figure 1 is a face view of the draught board. Fig. 2 is a View of the backgammon part. Fig. 3 is the end view open with bolt, &c.
The draught and backgammon board or box I make in the usual form, such as imitating bound volumes of books, 620., and finished as fancy may direct.
On the playing face for draughts Fig. 1, I make indentations A of a proper dept-h say about an eighth of an inch, and the regular number required for the game to receive the pieces and retain them and prevent them from sliding together when at play, except when they are taken out and moved by the hand.
On the backgammon side Fig. 2 I fix raised partitions B to prevent the pieces sliding from one division to the other.
The pieces or men I make with one face plain and the other sunk or ornamented, or some other device for distinguishing them, so that in playing with the plain face upward, when in the course of the game a king or kings are gained the piece must be turned to designate the same by showing a difierent face.
I make in each of the halves of the box a drawer O, to hold the pieces when playing and when not in usealso a slide D on the end to keep the box firm when in use open.
This improvement in draught boards I call the travelers portable draught board for the use and convenience of persons of all descriptions, to relieve the irksome monotony of traveling long distances by land or sea. These arrangements are made so that two persons can play when riding in railroad cars, or carirages, or on ship board, the holes in the face and the partitions prevent the pieces sliding and mixing by the unevenness of the motion, making a complete and compact article and much needed.
IVhat I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent is The construction of draught boards with the indentations on the face, the raised divisions in the backgammon part, and the drawers for the pieces all in combination, in the manner and for the purpose substantially as herein set forth and described.
EDWIN o. GOODWIN. a 8.
