My invention relates generally to a pile cutting means for the type of looms which weave pile fabrics and more particularly to an association with the pile wires generally employed in such looms, of\ a cutter for cutting the loops as the pile wires are withdrawn.
ln looms which employ pile wir-es, the warp threads are gene-rally looped over these wires and when it is desired to produce a cut pile fabric, cutters are so associated with the pile wires that upon withdrawal of the wires from the fabric, the cutters will cut through the loops. Due to the rapidity with which these pile wires are thrown in and withdrawn and the number of threads to be cut upon each withdrawal, each cutting edge is subject to a great number of cutting operations in a short time and therefore dulls quickly and such edges must obviously therefore be either frequently resharpened or frequently replaced. v
The use of a cutter which is separable from the pile wire for permitting replacement of the blade is attended w-ith a number of problems, among which is that any arrangement for securing the blade in position which on the one hand will serve to hold the blade in association with the pile Wire so that it will not shift therein nor will it be accidentally separated therefrom, may on the other hand so secure the. blade as to render its removal difficult and time consuming.
One of the important objects of my invention, therefore, is the provision of an arrangement whereby a cutting` blade is so associated with the pile wire that while it is iixedly held in position thereon and against accidental movement, its quick and effective removal is permitted.
Looms of this type referred to are already provided with pile wires and it is one of the important objects of my invention to. so devise the cutter and its manner of association with a pile wire that the cutter can be associated with the conventional form of pile wire without requiringa replacement of the pile wires or any substantial change or reconstruction therein.

lilly invention further involves the provision of a simple, inexpensive and eflicient cutting blade and of a novel, simple, readily operable, inexpensive manner of associating the blade with the pile wire so as to permit the bladeon the one hand to perform its function at a maximum of edectiveness, and at the saine time to permit of its quick removal and replacement.
For the attainment of these objects and such other objects as may hereinafter appear orbe pointed out, l have illustrated one embodiment of the invention in the drawings whereins Fig. l is an elevational view of one einbodiment showing the pile Wire with the blade in position;
Fig. 2 is an enlarged elevational view of the forward or front end of the pile wire which serves to hold the blade;

Upon viewing Fig. l of the drawings, it willbe observed that my arrangement shown in this embodiment for associating the blade with the pile wire, comprises the holder l0 which while it may be made integral with the pile wire is preferably made so as to be attached thereto and which is in the form of a thin strip of sheet material bent so as to provide a channelled construction Which is prclerably, though not necessarily, U-shaped in cross-section, the channel 11 being defined by the Walls 12 and 13, upstanding from the bottom 14. Extending forwardly from the wall 12, is the enlarged spoon-like member 15 preferably curved at its outer end 16, for purposes Well understood to those skilled in the art.
The channel 11 is provided in any preferred or desired manner with the inclined end abutment Wall 18, the illustrated embodiment showing this end VWall as formed by forcing together the Walls 12 and 18 along a line which is inclined as shown in the drawings, and which preferably merges into the line along which the holder is secured to the pile Wire and Which attachment is attained by a Welding operation.
The spoon-like member is provided with the punched up spring or finger 19 cut away along three sides, 20, 21 and 22, the sides 29 and 21 in this embodiment being preferably horizontal and parallel.
The spring finger 19 is preferably so constructed andV arrangedas to normally maintain its position in thev plane ofthe member 15 and yet permit of its being flexed out- Wardly from such plane for purposes shortly to appear. This spring member 19, it will be observed, is preferably attached to the VWall 15 along one vertical edge and has its free end extending generally in the direction ot the rear end of the holder and is provided on such free end vvith the angularly bent portion 24, so proportioned andangled as to extend across the continuation of the channel 11 between the Walls 12 and 13 and into the path of' movement of an implement in such channel.
Upon viewing Fig. 4 of the drawing, it Will be here observed that the knife or cutter which l employ is preferably of the iieX- ible Wafer type, the cutting' edge 26 of which inclines upwardly With reference to the bottom 2? at an angle substantially that of the end Wall 18 of the channel 11 and the butt end of Which is provided with the cutout or slot 29 the position and dimensions of Which are preferably determined by the character and dimensions of the portion 24 Vof the member 19 for the purposes intended. Y Y
In the insertion of this type of blade into the holder, it will be understood that it will be necessary to lierv the spring member 19 outwardly so as to Withdraw the part 24 thereof trom out of the path of movement of the implement in or into the channel, and that With the above member 24 so moved out of the channel the blade can be inserted into the channel With the front end beneath the wall 18, either by an angular movement or by a direct sliding movement along the bottom of the channel.
1t will be understood that the dimensions of the parts are such that when the front or pointed end of the blade is fully nested in the channel 11, beneath the inclined Wall 18, that the slot 29 of the blade will register with the part 24 of the spring 19 so that when the spring is permitted to return to its normal position, that is into the plane of the wall 15, the portion 24 thereofl Will enter the slot opening 29 of the blade and will lock the blade against movement.
To remove the blade all that isnecessary is that the springinger 19 be flexed so as to Withdraw the nrojection 24 from out of slot opening 29 of the blade, upon which the blade can be moved out of' the channel, either by a straight 'forward movement to the left in Fig. 2, or by an angular upward movement.
It Will be observed that with this arrangement, I not only secure the blade to the holder, Wholly through the engagement of that part of the blade which carries no cutting edge, but that the engaging means of which the spring 24 is a part, is positioned at a point in the holder which is open laterally through one side thereof, so that the release of' the blade can be quickly effected and Where it is desired for any reason Whatsoever to effect the release of the blade by breaking ofi the end part thereof, this can be done very readily.
lt will be further observed that the height or width of the intermediate part of the spoon is much greater than that of the spring 19 and that the tang is positioned a substantial distance beloW the top of the spoon, so that the inner surface'of the spoon 15 Will serve to support and guide the blade end.
In Figs. 4 and 5 of the drawing, l have shown a modified embodiment in which the spring finger 19 is positioned on that portion of the Wall 12 which forms the channel 11, and that in this embodiment of the invention the projecting part 24 of the spring 19 will extend across the channel and into a position closely adjacent and possibly contacting With the opposite Wall 13. The spring 19 is preferably positioned relatively lovver down on the Wall 12 in this embodiment, so as to bring it below the top of the Wall 13. Y
Figs. 6 and 7 of the drawing show a still further modified form in which the Wall 37 is provided with the member 40 extending from its upper edge and bent across the channel 11 and received in opening 41 in the opposite Wall 3S in which opening it is secured in any preferred or desired manner. The spring member 43 may be in all respect like the spring member 19 already described in connection With the other figures, and is provided with the bent lip 44.
Having thus described my invention and illustrated its use what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is l. F or use in looms for weaving pile fabrics, a holder adapted to form part of a pile wire and having a channel to receive a cutting implement or blade with one edge of th-e implement in the channel, and means for holding the blade against movement in said channel, said means including a member punched out of one of the walls of the channel along three sides and having a portion thereof bent to extend transversely of' the channel.
2. For use in looms for weaving pile fabrics, a holder adapted to form part of a pile wire and having a channel to receive a cutting implement or blade with one edge of the implement in the channel, and means for holding the blade. against movement in said channel, said means including a inember punched out of one of the walls of the channel along three sides and directed generally toward the front end of the holder, said member having the end portion thereof bent to extend across the channel.
3. For use in looms for weaving pile fabrics, a holderI adapted to form part of a pile wire and having a channel to receive a cutting implement or blade with one edge of the implement seated on the bottom of the channel, and means on said holder for holding the blade against movement in said channel, including a member formed on the holder and bent so as to have a portion projecting inwardly into the path of a cutting implement as it is moved relatively to and in the channel and spaced a substantial distance below the top of the holder, said projection extending transversely across the channel and being arranged and constructed so as to be capable of moving said portion out of the path of the cutting implement in the channel.

6. For use in looms for weaving pile fabrics, a holder adapted to form part of a pile wire and having a channel to receive a cutting implement or blade, and means on said holder for holding the blade against movef ment in said channel, including a spring member formed on the holder and having a portion thereof bent angularly and yieldingly projected inwardly into the path of a cutting implement in the channel and spaced a substantial distance below the top of the holder, whereby said member can be moved out of the path of movement of the implement in the channel.
7. The combination with a knife blade, of a pile wire having a blade holder presenting a tongue having a locking portion which interengages with and locks said blade, said blade holder having a flexible portion, other than said tongue., adapted to be flexed to move said locking portion laterally thereby to withdraw the locking portion of said tongue from its locking engagement with said blade. V
8. rIhe combination with a knife blade, of a pile wire having a blade holder presenting a tongue having a locking portion which interengages with and locks said blade, said blade holder having a flexible portion which, together with said tongue, presents a lever which can be rocked by flexing said holder to withdraw the locking portion of said tongue from its locking engagement with said blade.
9. A pile wire blade holder having a recess adapted to `receive a blade, and presenting a flexible tongue cut-out of the holder and having a locking portion at its free end and bent angularly from and with reference to the tongue, and which is adapted to interengage with and lock the blade in the recess, said blade holder having a flexible portion, other than said tongue, adapted to be flexed to move said locking portion laterally thereby to withdraw the locking portion of said tongue from its locking engagement with said blade.
