THOMAS J. CARROLL, OF BRIDGEPORT, CONNECTICUT, ASSIGNOR TO JOH M. JOHNSON AND PETER RING, OF SAME PLACE.
IMPROVEMENT IN FASTENERS FOR MEETING-RAILS OF SASHES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 161,929, dated April 13, 1875; application filed February 8, 1875.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, THOMAS J. CARROLL, of Bridgeport, in the county of Fair-field and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fasteners for the Meeting-Rails of Window-Sash, of
which the following is a specification, refer sented as removed. Fig. 4 is a side view of the fastener from the side B, in the position of open. 4
This invention is a device for locking the meeting-rails of the upper and lower sashes of a window together when the same are closed; and the essential and novel feature of the invention is a novel construction and arrangement of the pivoted lever, guard, spring, and locking-pin, which causes the fastening to lock automatically when the window is closed.
The letter a denotes the lower rail of the upper sash; b, the upper rail of the lower sash; c, a metal plate, screwed to the top of rail a; d, a complementary plate, screwed to the top of rail 1); c, a guard rising from plate 0, under which the locking-lever c swings when in position of locked; cl, a similar guard, rising from the plate d,- c, the locking-lever, pivoted on the pin 6; f, a spring, coiled on and attached to the pin 0, and bearing against the side of the rear end of the locking-lever in manner to press the lever toward the position of locked; g, a finger-pin, having some vertical play in the front end of the locking-lever; z, a dog borne on the lower end of the pin g, having a downward-projecting stud on the end, which shuts into a corresponding hole in the plate (I when in the position of locked, and which catches upon the back edge of the plate at when in the position of open; and k, a stop-pin.
The peculiar shape of the dog 2' is important. It not only holds the locking-lever in the position of locked, but also, in proper adjustment, holds the lever open by catching upon the rear edge of plate d, and when the window is closed, (whether it be the upper sash that is lowered or the lower sash raised, or the upper sash lowered and the lower sash raised,) the top of the plate 0 strikes and raises this dog, so as to free it from its hold on the plate d, and the spring automatically closes the lever.
I claim as my invention The plate 0, with its guard c, the plate d, the lever c, pivoted upon the plate (I, the spring f, and the locking-pin g, all combined and arranged to operate substantially in the manner and for the purpose set forth.
THOMAS J. CARROLL. Witnesses:
