PATENT .oru-uca.
FREDERICK S. ENKLEB AND GEORGE W.
BAIRD, OF POU GHKEEPBIE, NEW YORK.
, BOTTLE-CAP REMOVER.
I Application filed September 2'7, 1928. serial Nb. 138,090.
This invention relates to a bottle'cap remover, and more particularly to a hand tool for removing the crown caps from bottles.
Nearly all of the devices now employed- 5 for this purpose not only-press on thebody of the cap,'indenting it, but the llftlng or prying lug which engages the under edge of the cap, can also come in contact with the beaded head on the neck of the bottle and 1 crack off the glass.
The object of the invention is to provide a device of this class that shall press on the top of the cap at its edge, and engage the lower edge of the cap also at the edge but directly opposite each other so that the greatest leverage is obtained in removlng the cap, and the cap is not indented, and could be used again if. desired. v
A vfurther ob'ect of the invention is to so construct a bottie cap remover, that the pr ing lug can not come into contact with t e glass, and therefore no damage can be done to the bottle. n
Still another object being to; provide a device that shall be strong, durable, and made in one piece, and which may combine several articles if desired, such as a parer,. and an a ple corer.
With these and other-objects in view, our
invention consists in certain construction and combination of parts as will hereinafter be fully described and claimedand illustrated 1n the accompanying drawings which form a part hereopf, and in which'like iigarcs of reference" refer to corresponding "parts in all of the views, but it is understoo that we 'do not con-fine ourselves to the exact design as shown, as slight changes may be made withoiit-departing from the spirit of 0 the invention. e g Q N In the drawings 2- Figure 1 is a top plan view' of the bottle ca remover; I t I liigure 2 is a side elevation 'of the same.
4 i re 3 is a. vertical, lon itudinal sec-- tiona view, taken on the line D of Figurel.
Figural is a vertical, cross sectional view,
taken onthe line A'B ofFigure 1.
Referring to the drawings, the device as 80 here shown instamped from a single piece of sheet metal, and comprises a handle portion 1, which is U-shaped in cross section, and which is integral with a circular body portion 2, which is also U-shaped in cross section, the two comprising a ring and handle.
The openingB in the ring or body portion is of the proper diameter to embrace a -crown cork 4, without being a tight fit or too loose a fit, the purpose being to center the device on the cap, and thus revent either the pressing lug 5 or the lifting lug 6' from getting out of place.
I The lower edge of .the handle portion 1, is formed with the lifting h1g6 which is below the bottom of the ring 2, and extends inwardly sufiiciently to engage the lower edge of the crown cap 4, and not so far that it can come into contact with the glass of 7. the bottle. 1
Opposite said lifting lug 6, on the upper edge of they ring? is formed the pressing lug 5, which engages the top edge of the cap 4 and prevents the ring from slipping down on the cap, and provides the leverage for, prying off the cap.
If so desired one edge-7 of the handle 1 may be groundto provide a cutting edge, WhlOh may be used in paring vegetables, and so the end 8 of said handle may also be sharpened to providea corer.
Also the handle portion may be used to carry the name of themaker, or advertising matter as desired.
It will thusbe noted that the cross sectional shape of the device provides -strength,- while the ring centers it on the cap, and prevents the'lifting lug from, coming 1nto contact with the bottle.
" Having thus described our invention, what Iwe claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
A bottle cap remover of the class described, comprising in combination with a handle'member U-shaped in cross section, of, a ring portion also U-shaped'in cross section 31nd integral with said handle member, and
' adapted to embrace the periphery of the Cap, purpose of lifting said cap when said handle a pressing lug formed on the 11 per part of is pressed upward. said ring portion and adapte to engage In testimony whereof we hereunto afiix 10 the top edge of the cap, and a lifting 111g our si t 5 formed on the lower part of said ring and adapted to engage the lower edge of the can FREDERICK S. ENKLER. at a point opposite the pressinglug for the GEORGE W. BAIRD.
