Description
warren stares PATENT OFFICE.
BLOTTER-EDGErGU 'ARD AND PAPER CUTTER.
Application filed September 7, 1926. Serial No. 133,848.
My invention relates to ofiice furniture and especially to desk blotters and paper cutters and consists of the novel features herein shown, described and claimed.
The principal object is to make a blotter edge guard and paper cutter comprisinga metal straight edge adapted to hold itself in place above the near edge of a desk blotter to guard or protect the blotter, and adapted to be used'for tearing a sheet oi paper straight without disarranging the straight edge relation to the blotter.
Another object is to make a blotter edge guard and paper cutter comprising a long, flat, straight metal bar adapted to have its ends inserted under the corner retainers of a desk blotter and having pro ections extending from its near edge a short distance from its ends to engage the edge of the blotter and hold the bar in place above the edge of the blotter to protect the blotter and so that a piece of paper may be passed under the central portion of the bar and torn straight against either edge of the bar.
Other objects and advantages may appear from the drawing and specification.
In the drawing:
Figure 1 is a fragmentary perspective showing the invention in use,
Fig. 2 is a perspective of the blotter edge guard and paper cutter shown in Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is an enlarged fragmentary sectional detail on the line 33 of Fig. 1 and looking in the direction indicated by the arrows, and
Fig. at is a perspective analogous to Fig.2 and showing a modified construction.
The desk top 1 may be a part of a flat top desk or apart of a roll top desk or any other suitable table upon which office work may be done. The. desk blotter 2 has ahard base 3 of cardboard or the like, a top 4 of blotting paper and triangular retainers 5, 6, 7 and. 8 securely connected to the bottom 3 at the corners and extending over the corners of the blotting paper 4: so as to holdthe blotting paper removably in place so that the blotting paper may be readily re moved and new paper inserted.
The blotter edge guard and paper cutter B comprises a long, flat. straight metal bar 9 having parallel straight edges 10 and 11 and is of a suitable length so that the ends of the bar may be readily inserted under the blotter retainers 5 and 6, as shown in Fig. 1. The projections 12 and 13 each comprise an attaching portion 14 rigidly secured in place upon the bar 9 by a rivet 15 and a downwardly extending portion 16 fitting closely against the edge 11 and extending downwardly to engage the edge 17 oi the deli blotter 2 so as to hold the bar 9 securely in place above the edge 17 upon the desk blotand 13 extend downwardly just far enough to engage the cardboard 3 and not to engage the upper surface of the desk top 1, so that the desk blotter 2 may be moved upon the desk top 1 without danger of the projections scratching the desk top.
In the modification shown in Fig. 4 the bar 18 and the projections 19 and 20 are formed integral by stamping from a sheet of metal.
The preferred form shown in Figs. 1, 2.
and 3 is thought to be easier and cheaper to make because the bar 9 may be cut from strips of metal made to the desired width, whereas the bar 18 with the projections 19 and 20 must be stamped from a. sheet of metal and it would require a large punch and die which would result in a considerable waste of metal.
Thus I have produced a simple blotter edge guard and paper cutter for use upon a desk.
Various changes may be made without departing from the spirit of my invention as claimed.
I claim:
1. A blotter edge guard and paper cutter comprising a metal bar adapted to have its ends inserted under the corner retainers of a desk blotter and having spaced projections extending from its near edge to engage the edge of the desk blotter and hold the bar in place above the edge of the blotter to protect the blotter, said projections spacing the bar from the blotter and allowing paper to be cut to pass between the bar and the blotter.
2. A blotter edge guard and paper cutter comprising a metal bar adapted to have its ends inserted under the corner retainers of a desk blotter and having spaced projections extending from its near edge to engage the edge of the desk blotter and hold the bar in place spaced above the edge of the blotter to protect the blotter, and so that a piece of paper may be passed under the central portion of the bar above the blotter and torn straight against the edge of the bar.
8. A blotter edge guard and paper cutter comprising a long, fiat, straight metal bar adapted to have its ends inserted under the corner retainers of a desk blotter and having spaced projections extending from its rear edge a short distance from its ends to engage the edge of the blotter and hold the bar in place spaced above the edge of the blotter to protect the blotter and so that a piece of paper may be passed under the bar above the blotter and torn straight against either edge of the bar.
4:. A metal bar having a straight edge on one side, a plurality of spaced projections extending downwardly from the other side or". the bar said projections together with the ends of the bar cooperating with a blotter holder, being adapted to support the center part of the bar spaced above a desk blotter so that a sheet of paper may be passed under the bar and over the blotter and torn against the edge of the bar.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification.
