This invention relates to a novel construction vfor expanding the piston packing of a Huid pump piston, of a reciprocating pump, and has for an object to provide a piston ad,

Another object is the novel construction and operation that not only provides a watertight means for adjusting the pressure of the piston packing, but with each adjustment of the piston packing, the angular position of the .entire piston including th'e packing therein is shifted radially about its4 axis, so that each adjustment brings a different portion ofthe piston and piston packing'adjacent any given surface of the cylinder, thus causing a unifo-rm\wear and perfect fit at all times in the cylinder in which the said piston reciproca-tes.
With these and' other objects in view, the invention vresidesandfconsists in the construction and novel combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter more fully described, illustratedy in the accompanying drawings, and pointed out in theclaims hereto appended,` it being understood that various changes in the form, proportion, size and minpr'details lofconstruction within the scope of the claims may-be resorted to withou departure from the spirit or sacricing any of the advantages of the invention.

It is into this crosshead m novel piston ,rod 3 which comprises a so d rod 3 land a threaded sleeve 4, and a tube 5 which encases `a portion ofthe solid rod 3.
By referring ,to Fig. 1, Ait will be noted the main members of the piston roper 2, namely the piston member 6 and t e piston .follower 7, are both connected directly t the solid rod 3 by threaded engagement and that the tube 5 serves only to rotate the piston proper 2. This said tube 5 has no tension or compression stress due to the reciprocating action of the iston 2 upon the fluid being pumped.' is said feature is one of the main novel features of my improvement. l
While this piston construction is substantially the same in the formation of the pack- 'ing as my Patent Number 1,474,201, dated Nov. 13th 1923 and also substantially the same in the feature of rotating the entire piston to adjust the piston packing as described inmy application Serial Number 101,969, dated Apr. 14, 1926, it should be' noted that vin the construction of this improvement the piston member 6 andthe iston follower 7 both move in a longitudlnal direction toward each other whereby the piston ipacking 8 is both` compressed and expan ed.v In my Patent Number 1,474,201 and my atent application Serial Number 101,969 t e piston member is held against longitudinal movement and the piston follower therein only moves in a longitudinal direction.
Heretofore the main drawback to a positive mechanically adjusted piston was that they were not watertight. To make Ian absolute watertight piston I prevent the fluid from entering into they space between the solid rod 3 and the tube 5 by incorporating a series of fine threads 9 and' 10 which prevents'the fluid being pumped from entering. the said space. n
- Sleeve 4k is a tube havingthreads on the outside diameter and on the inside diameter, the said threads on the inside diameter are provided for threaded engagement with thesolid rod 3. This sleevef4 is provided to allow thev tube 5 to be assembled on solid rod 3 and to connect the solid rodI 3 with i the crossheadl. A taper pin 11- holds the 4sleeve 4 from rotating when the solid rod-4 1, that I screw Solid rod 3 is basicly the piston rod of the pump, the entire strain due to the pum ing of the fluid by the piston coming entire y upon this said rod 3, (as before said there is no strain or stress on the tube 5). Solid rod 3 serves to connect the piston member 6 and the piston follower 7 in direct relation with each other. The rod 3 is held stationary from rotating by locknut 12 located on the crosshead portion of said rod 3 and on the piston end portion I have provided two series of threads 9 and 10, which are left and right handed respectively. As the piston member 6 and the piston follower 7 have threaded engagement with the threads 9 and 10 respectively it will readily be seen that when the entire piston is rotated the piston member and follower will move in a longitudinal direction toward each other.
Tube or sleeve 5 is a tubular rod having threaded engagement 13 with the pist-on member 6. The main'function of this rod 5 is to rotate the entire piston proper 9.. On the cross head 1 portion of this tube 5 a locknut may be provided if desired. This locknut is designated in the Fig. 1, by number 14.
Piston member 6 is a cylindrical disc with a conical face 15 and a central outwardly disposed hub 16 that contains the spiral jaw clutch 17 which is cast integral with the piston member 6. This spiral vjaw clutch 17 provides the interengaging means between the piston member 6 and the piston follower 7. It should be noted that a square jaw `clutch or a key could serve equally as well as the said inter-en aging means. On the other end portion olf this central outwardly disposed hub 16 there is a pipe thread 13 for threaded engagement with the tube 5.
The piston follower 7 is a cylindrical disc with a conical face 15 similar to that' of the piston member 6. I have provided these conical faces 15 to actuate the flexible packing 8 that is located between them. It is noted that when the piston member 6 and the piston follower 7 are moved in a longitudinal direction toward each other the said flexible packing 8 will be both compressed and expanded. This flexible packing 8 may be made of any pliable material but is preferably made of a rubber composition. It is tubular in formation with a symmetrical conical face 15 on the both ends of saine. The outer diameter 19 will bear on the adjacent surface of the water pump liner in which the entire piston reciprocates and the inner diameter 20 will be supported on the hub 16 of the piston member 6 and the piston follower 7.
In the central hub 21 of the piston follower 7 is a series of threads for engagement with the threaded portion 10 of the solid rod 3. In the central hub 16 of the piston member is a similar series of threads, but of an opposite hand, for threaded engagement with the threaded portion 9 of the said solid rod 3, so that it will be seen that by holding the solid rod 3 stationary from rotating and against longitudinal movement and by rotating the both members 6 and 7 of the piston'simultaneously in cooperation with the threaded portions 9 and 10 of the solid rod 3, they being of different hands, the said rotation will cause the both members 6 and 7 to move in a longitudinal direction toward each other.
I wish to call attention to the fact that the sleeve 4 may be eliminated if the crosshead is provided with threads to suit the threaded end portion 2Q of the solid rod 3.
Also note that I have provided an interengaging means on the piston follower 7 that will coact with the interengaging means 17 of the piston member 6. This interengaging means will be cast integral with the piston follower 7 and will be of the well known spiral jaw clutch 17 formation. This interengaging means 17 permits the both members 6 and 7 of the piston to he rotated simultaneously when the tube 5 is revolved.
From the above description it will be observed that I have provided a novel construction, whereby when the tube 5 is rotated the both membersG and 7 of the piston proper and the packing 8 will be rotated and at the same time the piston member 6 and the piston follower 7 lwill both be moved in a longitudinal direction toward each yother thereby compressing and expanding thevpiston packing 8.
What I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. In a reciprocating pump, a pump pist0n comprising two members both of which are longitudinally adjustable relatively to each other, a pliable packing between said members adapted to be shifted upon contactino the relation of said members, a tubular rod connected to one of the said members, a stationary means within the tubular rod having threaded connection with both of the said members, and interengaging means between said members to cause them to rotate together whereby rotation of said rod will hange the relative positions of said memers.
2. In a reciprocating pump, a pump piston comprising two members both of which are longitudinally adjustable relative to each other, a pliable packing between said members, a tubular rod having connection with said members and adapted to be rotated to impart a rotating movement to said members. and means extending within the said tubular rod having threaded connection with the both said members to shift said members by rotation of said members whereby the pliable packing is adjusted by turning movement of said members.
3. In a. pump piston, two cylindrical discs I .25 and means for turnin vadapted to be moved in .a longitudinal direction toward each other, each said cylindrical disc having a conical surface that opposes the other, a packing between said W conical surfaces and shifted by change in the relative positions of said conical surfaces, a stationary member having screw thread connection with the two said cylindriclal discs, a coacting means carried by l the two said cylindrical discs to cause them to rotate simultaneously, a tubular rodhaving connection with the said discs and adapted to be rotated to impart a rotating movement to said discs whereby rotation of M said discs will change the relative positions of said discs and actuate the said packing.

5. In a reciprocatingpump, a pump piston comprising two members adapted for longitudinal movement toward each other, both4 said members having opposed conical surfaces, a packing between said conical surfaces and shifted by change in the relative positions of said conical surfaces, interengaging guide means carried'by said members arranged to prevent relative turnin move- A,ment while permitting relative longitudinal movement, a stationary rod connected to the 40 two said members by a screw thread for imparting longitudinal movement thereto by l rotation of said two members, and a .ro-
tatable rod mounted on said stationary rod and connected to the said members to rotate the same by the rotation of said rod.r
6. ln a pump, a plunger rod held against rotation upon the plunger rod couplin ,a ,sleeve disposed about the plunger ro a head mounted upon the sleeve and also threadedly mounted upon the plunger rod, a second head threadedly mounted upon the plunger rod, means -for holding the heads against relative rotation, and an expansible packing disposed between the heads whereby rotation of the sleeve said heads may be caused to rotate together, causing the both heads to move toward or away from each other toexpand thetpacking or to fpermit it to contract.
7. ln a pump having a plunger rod coupling, a plunger rod secured against rotation relatively thereto, a sleeve disposed about the plunger rod having one end bearing against the plungerrod coupling, a head rigidly' mounted upon the sleeve and also threadedly mounted upon the plunger rod, a second head threadedly mounted on the outer end of the plunger rod, means holding the heads against relative rotation a packing dispose between the heads an adapted to be` expanded when the sleeve is rotated,
causing the heads to rotate and causing the jooth heads to move toward each other, and means providing an abutment against which the end of the sleeve will abut at assembly.
8. A pump plunger comprising a piston rod, a. sleeve disposed about the piston rod,
a head secured vto the sleeve and having threaded connection with the piston-rod, a second head threadedly mounted upon the piston rod, means for lockin said heads against relative rotation, a pac ing disposed between the heads.
9. In a` pump having a piston rod coupling, a piston rod secured against rotation relatively thereto, a sleeve disposed about the piston rod, a first head secured to the,
sleeve and threadedly mounted upon the t piston rod, a second head threadedlyrmountedl upon the piston rod, means for locking said heads against relative rotation, a packing disposed between the heads, and means providing a shoulder on the other end ofthe piston rod for securing the piston rod to the piston rod coupling.
10. A pump plunger comprising ,a piston rod, a sleeve disposed 'about the piston rod, two heads each threadedly' mounted on .one end of the piston rod-in a right and left hand threaded formation respectively, one
