Application filed June 8,
My invention relates to garment hangers, and particularly to that class of hangers which, in one operation, may be scored and completely cut out in one-piece blanks, from 5 sheets of cardboard, strawboard, or like material, and then be formed by folding the blank along the scored lines and then interlocking fastening members, integral with the blank, to maintain the folded portions of the hanger in operative position.
My invention also relates to a combined arment hanger and container, the hanger being of. the one-piece class referred to above, while the container is of that class which may also, in one operation, be scored and completely out out in one-piece blanks, from sheets of cardboard, strawboard, or like substance, and be formed into the desired box-like shape, by folding the cut out blank along the scored lines and then inter lockingfastening members integral with the blank, tormaintain the folded portions in operative position; the hanger and container being so associated that the garment sup porting portion of the hanger is disposed within the container while the means. for suspending said hanger project .from said container and thereby provide elements whereby the container may be suspended or carried in an upright position, thuspermitting garments to be supported on the enclosed hanger without undesirable creasing or disarrangement. 4 One of the objects of my invention is, to
5 provide a garment hanger and combined garment hanger and container, which will embody 'the following features and advantages:
, That it may. be manufactured in the mini- 40 mum number of operations, by scoring and cutting the hanger and container. each in a sin 1e piece or blank, from inexpensive materlaladapted to be bent and folded along the scored lines'and securely but detachably 4a fastened in folded operative form.
That the two elements of my invention, when folded and. operably associated, may constitute both a garment hanger and container.
That the means provided for suspending the hanger may also automatically maintainthe parts of said hanger in operative position.
' That said hanger and said container, each at being adapted to be manufactured in a in one operation.

single piece or blank, may be packed, stored or transportedin an unfolded condition and thereby occupy a minimum of space.
That said garment hanger may be so associated with said container and maybe so designed, that the means for suspending the I hanger may be utilized as a handle for car rylng saidcontainer in an upright position.
That said garment hanger may be conveniently adapted to .hang, suspend, hold and support, in an uncreased condition, mensand womens garments, such as coats, shirts, waists, trousers, bloomers and other wearing apparel.
Other objects and advantages of my in- '11 vention will be obvious from the following specification and the accompanying drawings. I
My invention consists-in the particular comb1nat1on,, organization, and arrange- 1| ment of parts set forth in the specification,
.shown in the accompanying drawings, and
more particularly defined in the appended claims and in the method of effecting said combination, organization and arrangement. .0
In the drawings Fig. 1, is a perspective view-of m garment hanger, shown removably attac ed to the .upper endv of a container, which is shown in open position. ll
Fig. 2, is a perspective view of my gar ment hanger and container combined, showing the container in closed position, and the hanger; suspending means' detachably extending through one end of the container, to lo afl'ord means by which the container may be carried in upright position.

Fig. 4, shows the unfolded single-piece blank for the container, as cut out and scored Fig. 5, is a perspective viewof one form of my garment hanger, combined in a single piece with a closed ended container portion. Fig. 6, shows the unfolded single-piece blank for the garment hanger and container 1p; shown in Fig. 5, cut out and scored in .one operation.
Fig. 7, is a perfipective view of my garment hanger, olded in operative position, and disassociated from the container. ,1
in Fig. 7.
Fig. 10, is a perspective view of another modified form of garment hanger, illustrating its adaptability to suspension from a rod or other like support.
Fig. 11, is an enlarged view of another modified form of garment hanger, with a part thereof broken away, illustrating a modified form of means to suspend the hanger, arranged at the top portion thereof.
Flg. 12 is a sectional view of the modified form of garment hanger shown in 11,
taken on line 12-12 of Fig. 11 illustrating the formation of the body portion of the ban er and the arrangement of the suspending ook-like portions attached thereto.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, in which like numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts, my combined garment hanger and container consists of two separable and separately formed elements, 'each of itself a unit, namely the hanger 10, an enlarged view of the preferred form thereof, being shown in Fig. 7, and the container 11, a detailed view of one form of which, in open condition and associated with the hanger 10, is shown in Fig. 1.
These separable and separate units may be preferably cut, or otherwise fashioned, from a sheet of cardboard, strawboard or other suitable bendable material, so that each is formed from a single=piece blank, the thickness, form and dimensions whereof may vary and depend upon the particular shape, size and strength of hanger and container desired. The blanks, from which each of these units 10 and 11 is formed, are cut, or otherwise fashioned and scored in a single operation. Y
When it is desired to form a hanger 10, similar to that shown in Fig. 7, a blank 12,
6 having the shape, outline and scoring, as
or base portion 18 joining them.
shown in Fig. 8, is cut out, or otherwise fashioned.
When it is desired to form a container 11, similar to that shown in Fig. 1, a blank 13, having the shape, outline and'scoring as shown in Fig. 4, is cut out, or otherwise fashioned.
In order to form the hanger 10, the blank 12 is folded along the scored lines 14 and 15, so that the side portions 16 and 17 are bent upwardly toward each other, until they are approximately parallel to each other and at right angles to the intermediate ie1b e tongue-like portions or fastening members 19 and 20, are then bent or folded inwardly,
toward each other, along the scored lines 21 and 22, until they bridge the distance between the sides 16 and 17 and so as to overlie each other, in order that the tongues 23 may be received into engagement w1th the slot 24 and lock the parts 19 and 20 together, thereby serving. as means to detachably hold the sides 16 and 17 in their folded operative position. The infolding and joining of the members 19 and 20 thereby results in forming the hand openings 25 and 26, in the opposite side members 16 and 17, and .thus provides handles 27 and 28 in these sides, by means of which the hanger 10 may be suspended from a hook, or suitable support, or by which the hanger 10 and container 11 may be conveniently carried, when they are associated and combined as shown in Figs. 1 and 2.
Although the tongue- like fastening members 19 and 20 are shown and described as being used to hold the side portions 16'and 17 in folded operative position, said fastening members 19 and 20' may be entirely eliminated, if desired, by being cut out along the lines 21 and 22, at the time when the blank 12, shownin Fig. 8, is out. It will be apparent that this can be readily accomplishedwithout destroying the utility of my anger. because the handles, or suspending means 27 and 28, when employed to suspend the hanger, will automatica ly maintain the side portions 16 and 17 in operative position, substantially similar to that in which they are maintained by the fastening members 19 and 20, as shown in Fig. 7.
My hanger may also be provided with slots, or openings 31 and 32, near the base of each of the side portions 16 and 17, which may be adapted to engage womens bloomers, mens trousers, or other garments suitable for suspension therefrom and thereby hold said garments in carrying position.
A modified form of my hanger, in which the interlocking fastening members 19 and 20, shown in Figs. 7 and 8, are omitted, is shown in Fig. 9, wherein the openings 33 and 34: are provided, by. means of which the hanger may be supported on a clothes hook. or any other suitable holdingdevice. The
blank, from which this type of hanger is included, as desired, while the openings 33 ahd 34 may be of any suitable form.
Another modified form of my. hanger is shown in Figs. 11 and 12. In this form of hanger, a hook 35 is pivotally attached to "the side portion 36, by means of a pivot 37,
so that when the hanger is folded and the hook 35 is in a substantially upright position, the hanger may be supported-thereby from any suitable holding device.v The hook 35 is provided with a depending arm portion 38, which is arranged to engage and hold, as shown, the side portion 39, when said side portion and hook 35 are in normal position, such as when the garment hanger .is suspended.
The blank from which the type of garment hanger, shown in Figs. 11 and 12 is formed, will similarly follow the general line, of the blank shown in Fig. 8, but in this instance, the o enings 33 and 34. shown in Fig. 9, have con omitted and the hook 35 substituted therefor.
Another modification of my hanger is shown in Fig. 10. In this modification, the blank from which the hanger is formed is cut, or otherwise fashioned to provide, in-
tegral with the side portions 40 and 41 of the hanger, two oppositely disposed hook members 42 and 43, whichare adapted to'be placed over and engage a rod 144. or other suitable support, when it is desired to thus suspend the hanger therefrom.
As the carrying out of my invention here in disclosed permits and suggests the provision of a receptacle integral with and be- .neath my garment hanger, a-modification of my invention, embodying and combining the receptacle with the hanger. is shown in Figs. 5 and 6. In this form of combined hanger and container, the device consists of the hanger' and the container portion .44, with the hand openings 45 and 46, the handles 47 and 48 and the bridging fastening members 49 and 50, arranged to hold the container portion in its desired shape.
Theblank from which this type of combined container and hanger is formed is shown in Fig. 6. This blank is fashioned in one piece, and 'the device of Fig. 5 isformed by folding the sides 51 and 52 along the scored lines 53 and 54, toward each other, substantially at right angles to the portion 55- and then folding the ends 56 and 57 toward each other, along the scored lines 58 and 59. Snap fastening means 60, 61 and 6263 are brought into engagement, to hold folded blank from -whi in the Figs. 1 2 and 3 is formed. In the the folded container blank in folded position. to form a. compact combined container and hanger, as shown inFig. 5. j
A further modification of my combined container and hangeris shown in Figs. 1, 2, and 3, while in Fl 4 is shown the unh the container shown t pe of combined container and hanger s own in Figs. 1, 2 and 3, it will be noted that the-hanger 10 and the container 11 are not integral, but are separable and detachable from each other. This device is constructed by combining a hanger of the type while the section 66 and the side port-ion 65,
have correspondingly placed and similar slots 69 and 70, transversely disposed across the substantial central portions of said sections. An intermediate portion. 71, of the blankis likewise provided, on its 0 posite.
ends, with tongue-like fastening mem crs "7 2 and 73, substantially similar to the members 67 and 68. Slots 74 and 75 are provided in the section 65, near the opposite margins of said section, in order to receive and be' engaged by the tongue- like fastening members 67, 68, 72 and 73, to'hold the portions comprising the section 65 of the container blank in desired position, where the blankis folded to form the container 11. The blank 13 is scored transversely along the lines .76, 77, 78 and 79, and is longitudinally scored along the lines 80 and 81, while the section 64is cut transversely at 82 and 83 from the margins to the lines 80 and 81, in order to form overlapping sections 84 and 85.
My container is formed by inwardly folding the opposite side portions of the section 65 of the blank along the scored lines 80 and 81,'until they are-at substantially right angles to the body of the blank. The tonguelike fastening members 67, 68, 72 and 73 are likewise inwardly folded along the lines 80- and 81, to correspond to the folded position of the side portions'of section 65. The end portion 66, carrying the tongues 67 and 68, is then-folded inwardly along the scored line 79, to a'position substantially at right angles to the section'65'and the'ton ucs 67 and 68 site folded side portions; The section '65 is folded along the scored line 78 and then turned, to a position substantially at right angles to the intermediate section '71 and are interlocked into the slots 74 of the oppo- I right angled position in relation to the section 64. The sections 84 and 85, near the extremity of the section 64, are then inward ly folded along the lines 80, and 81, into a position substantially at right angles'to the section 64 and overlap the ends of the infolded opposite sides of the section 64, and
.aid in holding these folded sides in their folded position by frictional contact therewith. Both sides of the container .11 will now be seen to be formed in the intended folded shape with the sides in open relation, as shown in Fig. 1.
The scored .transverse line 77 serves (in effect) as a hinge for the container, by means of which that portion formed from the section 64 of the blank may be bent along the line 77, so that the container may be closed, as shown in Fig. 2, with its lateral folded sides and upper end telescoped into that portion of the'container formed from the section 65 of the blank, with sides and end enclosed within the latter portion of the container and lying adjacent the lateralsides and upper end thereof.-
The slots 69 and 70, hereinbefore referred to, it will be seen, now he in the free ends of the formed container and are so arranged that they register with each other; By this arrangement, these slots 69 and 70 are adapted to receive the handles 27 and 28 of the hanger 10, when the iatter is mounted in operating -position within the container, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, and to permit said handles to project therethrough. "The handles 27 and 28 thereby serve to lock the container in closed position and afford means by which it can conveniently and readily be carried, when the hanger is in position within the container and the latter is closed U as above described, a
lVhen the hanger 1O ispositioned within the container 11, and the handles 27 and 28 v are inserted in the slots 69 and 70, the bridging tongue- like fastening members 19 and 20, are at the same time inserted into and through the slots 69 and 70 and are interlocked, as shown in Figs? and 1, so that they overlie the outer face of the end of the inner member of the container, formed from the section 64: of the blank, and retain the hanger 10 in its installed position within the container, in detachable relationto that end of the container by which it is supported.
The handles 27 and 28, being of suitably bendable material, they will be laterally displaced from their upright position, when the cover portion of the container, formed from the section 65 of the blank, is closed upon the inner portion of the eontainer, as
formed from the section 64: of the blank;
but they may be readily drawn through the slots 69 in the upper end portion 66 of the cover section of the container, as formed from the section 65 of the blank, when the slots 69 register with the slots 70, after the operation of closin the two sections. of the container upon each other is completed.
It will be obvious from the above description of my invention, that I have provided a hanger separable from a container, that is adaptable for conveniently supporting substantially any style of garment, and that said hanger is of cheap manufacturing cost, of simple construction, and of such formation that it'may readily be packed, unfolded and transported in aininimum of space. I have also provided a container that is of cheap manufacture, of integral construction, which may be readily folded and retained in desired formation by simple fastening means, which is a convenient device in which garments and other objects may be stored and transported, which is readily ac-- I have also provided a container and hanger of such a type and construction that they may be combined and associated to form a device in which the hanger is detachably related to the container, with the garment supporting section of the hanger enclosed in the container, arranged so that garments may be conveniently carried thereon, while enclosed within the container, while at the same time the ready opening. ofthe container and convenient removal of any or all of the suspended carried garments may be accomplished without disassoeiation of the hanger and container, and the two units of which may be unfolded and stored or transported in the minimum of space, and I have still further effected this combination, so that the handles or-supporting means for the hanger not only serve as means by which the combined device may be suspended and conveniently carried, but also serve as means by which the container may be securely retained in closed position,
whether in suspended or unsuspended position or 1n transport.
Although I have described and shown my invention in a preferred and modified form of embodiment thereof, I do not wish to be limited thereby, except as the state of the art and the appended claims may require, for it is obvious that various other modifications, organizations and arrangements of and suspension means on each of said side.
