Description

D. J. STEIN.
COMBINED TABLE AND WRITING-DESK. No,174,588, Patented March 7,1876.
v 4/. %M /r UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE. 2
DAVID J. STEIN, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
IMPROVEMENT IN COMBINED TA BLES AND WRlTlNG-DESKS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 174,588, dated March 7, 1876; application filed- February 9, 1876.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, DAVID J. STEIN, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Table and Writing-Desk coinbined,-whieh invention is fully set forth in the following specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1 represents a cross-section of my table and desk when shut. Fig. 2 is a like section thereof when open.
Similar letters indicate corresponding parts.
My invention relates to an improved article of furniture, which is convertible into a ladies work-table or a writing-desk, and consists in a supporting-case, to which is hinged a lid, carrying a folding desk, the desk being also hinged to the lid in such a-manner that when the lid is shut a table is obtained, and when it is raised the desk may be swung out, and allowed to rest on the supporting-case, which to this end is provided with a cross-piece, as hereinafter more fully set forth.
In the drawing, the letter A designates the supporting-case of my improved article of furniture. B is the lid, and O O are the parts of the desk. The case A is placed on legs 'D D, and the lid B is connected to the case by hinge-joints a, while the part 0 of the desk is connected to the lid by hinge-joints b. The desk, moreover, is fitted in a recess, E, formed in the lid B, and retained in this recess through the medium of a spring-catch, c. O is the body of the desk, and O is its leaf, and the two parts connected together by hinge-joints d in such a way that the leaf may be folded on the body, and the whole placed within the recess E, as seen in Fig. 1.
When the desk is folded up, as just stated,
and the lid B is closed on the supporting-case A, it forms the top for a work-table, while, when the lid is raised, the desk 0 C may be unfolded or swung out, and allowed to rest on the case, and thus the desk is brought in a convenient position for use.
In the interior of the case A is arranged a cross-piece, F, and when the desk is unfolded, as last described, the body 0 thereof rests on this cross-piece, while the leaf 0 is supported on the side of the case, as seen in Fig. 2. The cross-piece F, in this example, not only forms a supplemental support for the desk, but also serves to divide the case A into compartments, which maybe subdivided so as to form pigeon-holes for the reception of stationery and other articles.
By so constructing the lid B that the desk can be placed therein, the whole interior part of the supporting-case A may be utilized for receiving stationery, and for various other purposes.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by. Letters Patent, is-
A combined table and writing-desk, constructed of the case A, having the cross-piece F, for the purpose specified, in conjunction with the hinged lid B, and folding desk 0 O, the whole being adapted to operate substantially as described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing, l I
have hereunto set my'hand and seal this 3d day of February, 187 6.
