Description

Oct. 21, 1930.V l i M. J. KELLING l1,779,132 CONTAINER Y Filed Aug. 9, 1929 Patented Oct. 21, 193i) UNITI-:b srATEs MAX J'. XELLING, 0F WILMETTE, ILLINOIS l CONTAINER Application illed August 9, 1929. Serial No. 884,964.
This invention relates to containers for confections, nut` products and other edibles which should be carefully protected against contamination and changes in moisture content, but which should be so packaged that they may be attractively displayed. It is common practice to emp oy a` transparent sheet material known a glassine in the packagin of edibles, but this material is 1o open to t e objections that it possesses little strength and is`not moisture-proof.
There is available a tough, moistureproof, transparent material knownas cellophane, manufactured by theJDu Pont Company, but it has not heretofore been practicable to employ this material in the production of a moisture-proof-package for the reason that its moistureroof property militates against the use o adhesive material I 2o in sealing the package.
l The present inventlon makes pos-sible the use of cellophane for the purpose stated.
The nature of the' invention will be un- .y
, .".3 ering B of cellophane whlch closes the upper side of tlie portion A, and a sheet metal cover C which fits upon `the body portion A and i protects the cellophane covering B'. While the container is herein shown as circular in 4o outline, it will be understood that it may partake of various forms.
container shown in the drawings is especially ada ted for nut products.
The bo yf portion A comprises a bottom 4.1 1 and a circular side wall 2, said side wall being emb'ossed to form an annular bead 3 that encircles the side wall 2 a slight distance above the seam or joint 4 between the bottom 1 and the sidewall 2. The bead 3 Land. seam i project outwardly with respect The particular` to the side wall and thus form betweenthem an annular space which may be described as a shallow groove 5'.
The cellophane covering B has a periph` eral portion B which surrounds the sdidef ci wall 2 and which is held in place by means such, for example, as a narrow band 6 of paper which encircles the lower portion of the vperipheral margin B. The band 6 lies within the shallow groove 5 and is thereforera held against displacement by means ofthe bead 3 and seam 4. The ends of the strip of paper 6 are overlapped and pasted together at 6. p
In practice, the body portion A is lledws with the desired contents, after which a circular sheet of cellophane is laid upon the body portion A, the diameter of said sheet being such that its periphery projects beyond the periphery of the body portion to an extent equal approximately to the height of the side wall 2. The cover C is then slipped upon the body portion A, in which operation the cellophane is drawn taut over the contents of the box and the peripheral portion ofthe sheet is bent down around the I side wall 2. In thus assuming the form of Y an annular flange or margin, the peripheral portionv of the sheet of cellophane becomes overlapped at irregular intervals asindil' 30 cated at B in Figs. 2 and 3. The cover C fits snu l over the'side wall 2 and the interpose {ayer of cellophane; That part of the peripheral portion of the sheet of cellophane which extends below the cover C is then confined in place by means of a strip of paper 6.
It will be seen that the contents of the package may be attractively displayed beneath the transparent covering B, said cover preventing contamination and changes in moisture content. The .paper strip 6 which tightly encircles' the peripheral portion of the cellophane provides a substantially hermetic seal. The use of this band between two annular confining formations, such as 3 and 4, has solved the problem of securing a wrapping which is moisture-proof and thus not a apted to receive an application of adhesive material.
` open side of said body portion and having I claim as my invention:
A container comprising a body portion, i
a sheet of cellophane extending over the a perimeter projecting beyond said body portion, a cover fitting over the upper portion of said body portion and confining the perimetral portion of said sheet of Vcellophane between itself and the body portion, there being an annular groove in the body portion rbelow said cover, and a band lying in said groove and confining the peripheral portion of said sheet of cellophane. I
In testimony whereof, I have hereunto aixed my signature.
