Description
April 28, 1931. Q T HATCH 1,802,600
PANEL FOR DooRs AND THE LIKE Filed March 17, 1930 Patented pr. 28, 1931 lJNll STATES nPATENT OFFICE-p CHARLES T. HATCH, OF ALBION, MICHGAN, ASSIGNOR TO UNION STEEL PRODCTS l COMPANY, OF ALBION, MICHIGAN l PANEL FOR DOORS AND THE LIKE Application led March 17, 1930.` Serial No. 436,526.
I have illustrated my improvements in the accompanying drawing as l have applied the same to doors for bakers proof boxes or cabinets. My improvements, are however, desirable for use in other relations such as in ice boxes, storage rooms and the like.
The main objects of this invention are to provide a panel adapted for the uses indicated Which is light in weight, strong and rigid and at the same time highly eiicient in insulating qualities.
Objects relating to details and economies of my invention will appear from the description to follow. The invention is de- '1 fined and pointed out in the claims.
A structure which is a preferred embodi ment of my invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which Y Fig. l is a front perspective View of a proof box embodying the features of my invention.
Fig. 2 is a side view of one of the doors removed from the cabinet.`
Fig. 3 is a horizontal fragmentary section .on a line corresponding to line 3 3 of Figs. l and 2 through one of the doors.
In the accompanying drawing, l designates a bakers proof box or cabinet and 2,2 the doors thereof. These doors are of laminate structure consisting of a central ply 3 of fibrous felted material of substantial thickness. The relatively thin intermediate panels 4; of wood veneer are arranged upon the sides of the panel 3 and glued thereto throughout. The outer panels 5 of sheet metal are arranged upon the sides of the intermediate panels 4 and glued thereto throughout.
rlhe top, front and aportion of the bottom edge are provided with a flat reinforcing bar 6 of a width corresponding to the thickness of the central and intermediate panels and is arranged in supporting engagement therewith.
The edges 7 of the outer plies are folded upon each other and upon the reinforcing bar 6, being soldered together at 8 providing a sealed joint between these overlapping parts and secured together and to the barby means of the drive screws 9.
The edges of the outer plies are overlapped on the rear edge of the panel and the portion of the bottom edge not provided with a reinforcing bar and secured to each other as shown at l0 and secured to each other as by the solder 11.
The panels are comparatively light in 0 weight, are economical in structure, and at the same time the exposed edges are protected so that they are not indented or broken by being struck by wheeled racks or other ob- Jects.
Having thus' described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
1. A door comprising a central ply of fibrous insulating material of substantial thickness, relatively thin intermediate plies of wood veneer, and outer plies of sheet metal, the several plies being glued together, a reinforcing bar of metal of a width approximating that of the thickness of the central and intermediate plies disposed on the front, top and at least a portion of the bottom edges of said plies in supporting engagement therewith, the edges of the outer metal plies being folded into overlapping relation o-n the said reinforcing bar and the unreinforced edges of the other plies, and a plurality of fasteners securincr the overlapping parts to said reinforcing ar.
2. Ak door comprising a central ply of fibrous insulating material of substantial thickness, relatively thin intermediate plies of wood veneer, and outer plies of sheet metal, the several plies being glued together, a reinforcing bar of metal of a width approximating that of the thickness of the central and intermediate plies disposed on the front edge of said plies in supporting engagement therewith, the edges of the outer metal plies being folded into overlapping relation on the said reinforcing bar and secured thereto.
3. A panel comprising a central ply of insulating material of substantial thickness, relatively thin intermediate plies of wood veneer, and outer plies of sheet metal, the several plies being glued together, and a reinforcing bar of metal of a width approximating the thickness of the central and intermediate plies arranged on an edge thereof, the edges hand.
of the outer metal ply Abeing folded in overlapping relation upon said reinforcing bar and being secured together and to said bar.
4. A panel comprising a plurality of plies of non-metallic material, and outer` plies of sheet metal, the several plies being secured together to provide a unitary structure, and a reinforcing bar of metal of a Width approximating the non-metallic plies disposed on an ,I edge thereof, the edges of the outer sheet metal plies being folded into overlapping relation upon said reinforcing bar and secured to each other and to said bar.
In Witness whereof I have hereunto set my CHARLES T. HATCH.
