Description
'June 23, 1931. w, p, FRANKENSTIN 1,810,956
' FOLDING BOX Filed Aug. 22, 1930 Patented June 23, 1931 UNITED; STATES mam OFFICE WILLIAM P. FRANKENSTEIN, OF CINCINNATI, OHIO FOLDING BOX Application filed August 22, 1930. 'Serial No. 477,056.
fied blank and folding operations, with an accompanying security and protection to the goods as is not attained in other box constructions known to me.
These and other objects are attained in the box described in the following specification and illustrated in the accompanying drawings in which:
Fig. 1 is a perspective view of a box blank embodying my invention, partially folded.
Fig. 2 is a perspective View of a box constructed of a blank such as shown in Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a fragmental perspective view of a detail of my invention, disclosing a slight difference from the corresponding detail shown in Fig. 1.
'A blank such as embodies my invention consists of a bottom 4, a top 5, lugs 5 attached to the ,end edges of top 5, a side 6 which joins the top and bottom, an opposite inner side 7 which is attached to the opposite edge of the bottom 4, an outer side 8 which is attached to top 5, a closure flap 9 which is attached to outer side 8, ends 10 and 11 which are attached to bottom 4:, top flaps 12 and 13 which are attached to ends 10 and 11 respectively, tongues 15, 16, 17, and 18 which are attached to the opposite ends of inner side 7 and ends 10 and 11 respectively, a collapsible support 19 which is attached to side 7 and snap fastener members 20 and 21 on the bottom 4 and closure flap 9 respectively.
As shown, the tongues 15 and 18 are folded inwardly to be engaged by ends 10 and 11, while tongues 16 and 17 are folded inwardly to be engaged by side 6, the edges of all the tongues resting on the bottom 4, when the side 7 and ends 10 and 11 are folded at right angles to the bottom 4.
The folded top, bottom, sides, ends,
tongues and flaps ofthe box are now ready for fastening in closed or completely folded condition. This is accomplished by the fastener elements 20 and 21 being brought to attached condition, but, because of the more or less easily bent material of which the box is made, there has to be provided a foldable but nevertheless spring-like support 19 which normally stands expanded as shown and forms a rigid abutment for the flap 9 and bottom 4: to press against top 5 so that the two elements of fastener 2O21 may be snapped together by pressure of the fingers on the top and bottom of the box.
The entrance of lugs 5 into slots 10 when the box is brought to completely folded condition, performs the function of preventing the flaps and ends from being pushed inward and permitting pressure to collapse the opposite faces of the box. V
Fig. 1 shows one form of support 19, but, it is obvious that this is capable of modification without alteration of the function of the support. Hence, if the supportbe made in the form shown in Fig. 3, this also being collapsible, the function of holding the bot tom and top apart while the fingers are being pressed on the fastener member 21 and oposite face of the top to permit snapping of the fastener, is as readily performed.
Having thus described my invention what I claim is: v
A folding box comprising a top, a bottom, ends, sides and closure flaps formed integrally from a blank of sheet material, members of a snap fastener in the flap and bottom, and means between the top and bottom,
forming a part of the box and constituting a support permitting pressure on the fastener member of the flap and the box top to lock the box closed by snapping the fastener element together. 7
In Witness whereof, I aifix my signature.
WILLIAM P. FRANKENSTEIN.
